ASLCSC Senate Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 4:32 p.m.

Present: Fox, Heath, Lawyer, Ochszner, Oglesby, Skow, Redford, McCoy, Nunez

Approval of Minutes of February 13, 2001.
Motion to pass made by Senator Heath, Seconded by Senator Fox. Minutes approved as written.

Senator Heath made a motion to amend the agenda and move audience time before Dr. Meier's report. Senator Nunez seconded. Motion carried.

Audience Time: Various audience members from Technical and Industrial spoke on behalf of Kevin Dodge for Technical Senator. Six of the nine industrial programs were represented - Auto Body, Auto Mechanics, Industrial Mechanics, Agricultural Equipment Technology, Welding, Drafting,

Dr. Meier - Last week you may have noticed in the Pathfinder and on list serve the news about a person with infectious Tuberculosis. Dr. Meier thanked Melissa Nelson for keeping everything confidential. This is a highly confidential issue. Students need to be more aware of the disease. Anyone tested will be educated about the disease. Test can show positive but not be infectious tuberculosis. Another issue going on is the budget and student fees. President Wright and VP Sonnen are scheduled to meet with Dr. Meier and Dean Froehlich to do some preliminary work on student fees. There will be a process for student fees to come before all of you for review. He spent a significant amount of time last Friday with the Strategic Planning Team. They are setting goals and strategies at this point. Dr. Meier along with the President and other Vice Presidents were given the opportunity to provide feedback. He stated that he likes the direction that the Strategic Planning is going. Senator Lawyer asked Dr. Meier about the JFAC decision regarding faculty salaries in Idaho. Dr. Meier could not confirm anything about the JFAC decision. Discussion ensued.

Mr. Magruder: Repeat announcement about the importance of the Career Fair at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman. 9 am to 3:30 p.m. Free ride from LCSC to Pullman. Sign up in the Career Development Office. Next announcement - SUB Board meets next Wednesday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. in SUB 225.

Executive Reports:
Vice President Sonnen: Reported on the Yard Sale fundraiser she has been planning for May. It will be a community yard sale where people from the community can pay a price to have their yard sale address publicized on a list. Students will have the opportunity to purchase space on campus to sell items as well. All proceeds will go to the graduation awards banquet and the graduation day BBQ.  Craft Fair - ASLCSC has never received a "free" booth at the Dogwood Festival for allowing the Center for Arts to have a "free" booth at the craft fair. Center for Arts has paid half price for the craft fair and ASLCSC has paid half price at the Dogwood Festival. Information received from B. Powell. The Auto Body Club asked VP Sonnen and Majority Leader Ochszner if student government was interested in having/being a team judge for the Show-n-Shine at the Dogwood Festival. The consensus was yes, they were interested. Another update from Auto Body involving Student Technology Fee - last year Student Technology awarded Auto Body $3,500 toward the purchase of the Profit (a paint analyzing machine costing about $13,000). Auto Body was given the task of coming up with half of the purchase price. The company accepted the $3,500 plus $500 from Auto Body and donated the rest of the purchase price. Way to go! VP Sonnen also reported on the Presidential Search. All is going well. She will be using her office for some Search Committee stuff and she will post a "Do Not Disturb" sign during these times.

Old Business:
Motion for roll call vote - Senator Heath. Second Senator Redford. Motion failed.
Senator McCoy stated that secret ballot voting is in direct violation of Idaho meeting laws.

Senate Bill #01-S032, Motion Senator Health, Second Senator Redford. Discussion. Vote - 5 yes, 4 no. Bill failed.

Senate Information Reports:
Senator McCoy reported on the Activity Center. He checked with JFAC. It is not in a bill form. It is considered a capitol plan. It left JFAC with a strong recommendation to pass.

Senator Lawyer reminded the Senate that this Thursday is the lunch meeting with President Zimmerman. The topic will be Cultural Diversity and the Vision Statement. The meeting will be in SUB 143 at Noon.

Senator Heath called an executive session. Senator Fox Seconded. 5:00 p.m.

Meeting resumed - 5:20 p.m.

Senator Lawyer asked about the procedure to fill the Technical Senator position. Discussion. It was stated that in twenty days if the Senate Majority Leader has not brought a bill before the Senate recommending someone for the position, then any Senator may do so.

Motion to adjourn, Senator Fox, Second Senator Skow. Meeting Adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
