Mr. Magruder: Senate Majority
Leader Ochszner read Mr. Magruder's written report.
My Report for Tuesday, February 6, 2001. In an effort to publicize LCSC
events better, we have a pilot program called Warrior Wednesday. This is a
Live Remote Radio Broadcast in the SUB from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Good
Times 105 KVTY starting this Wednesday, February 7th. The radio
show will not only get LCSC events better exposure, but will also provide
tremendous educational opportunity for students who wish to get involved
in the production of the weekly show or as an on air personality. However,
this exciting program does not come without a cost. We are not sure of the
exact cost at this time. We are still in negotiation with Good Times 105.
Don't hold me to this, but a 30-second spot might go for $20.83 each.
Don't forget the free airtime available on LC Info Line that airs on
Channel 13. Any questions you might have regarding Warrior Wednesday can
be direct to me. That concludes my report. Your faithful advisor, Dick
Magruder.
Executive Reports:
President Wright: Announcement that the
Technical Advisory Board is holding its annual meeting in the WCC on
Monday at 6:30 p.m. Senator Lawyer asked if there were students on this
board and if not, why. Kevin Dodge stated that this advisory board is made
up of some people from LCSC and people from area businesses who give their
input on things LCSC could do differently or better since most of the
technical graduates are employed locally. Vice President Sonnen stated
that there were also advisory boards for different outreach programs that
give their input for those programs.
Vice President Sonnen posted
the current budget balances. She stated that with several people going to
State Board Meetings in March the Leadership & Development account
might need some more money. If the maximum amount of spring stipends is
expended, there will be $385 left in the scholarship account. She proposes
transferring that amount into the general account. She pointed out the
amount earned from the craft fair, which was deposited into the graduation
account. She also stated the amount that Judicial will pay the polling
clerks and the balance that would leave in the Judicial account. Vice
President Sonnen brought to the Senate's attention that there was a
technical student who recently passed away do to an aneurysm. She was a
single mother and left behind a daughter. VP Sonnen would like to give
something to the daughter from ASB. Further discussion on Thursday.
Committee Reports:
Student Affairs: Senator Lawyer reported.
It was suggested that the Student Affairs Committee combine with the
Administrative Procedures Committee. This is just in the discussion stage.
Student Affairs is currently discussing honors eligibility. If a student
has just one credit (or more) not completed at graduation time, that
student cannot walk in graduation with honors. They will still have the
honors on their transcript, however. This is currently being discussed.
The absence request form is also still being discussed. People on the
committee basically said that it wasn't worth the paper it is written on.
Senator Lawyer told them that it creates a paper trail that can then be
taken to a hearing board in the case of a poor grade based on attendance
alone. VP Sonnen stated that she had worked on the absence request last
year and that the committee originally wanted to let the professor decide
whether or not to sign. Then it was proposed to have two places to sign,
one approving the absence and one to show that the student tried to get
approval. Students are responsible for their coursework.
Faculty Senate: VP Sonnen
reported. Faculty Senate is discussing faculty sabbaticals, salaries, the
honors issue, among other topics.
Clubs & Organizations Council:
Senator Ochszner reported. The first meeting was today. There was about
ten clubs represented. They will be working on putting together bylaws.
New Business:
Senate Bill #01-S031, Motion Senator Heath,
Second Senator Lawyer. Discussion. 7 yes Bill passed.
Senate Bill #01-S032, Motion Senator Heath, Second
Senator Lawyer. Motion to include secret ballot.
Discussion ensued. VP Sonnen stated that Kevin Dodge is well known in the
Technical and
Industrial area. He is currently a recruiter for the technical programs.
Vote: 4 yes, 3 no Bill Passed. Kevin Dodge was sworn in by Justice Sheets.
Senate Bill #01-S033, withdrawn by the author
Senate Bill #01-S034, Motion to table the bill was made
by Senator Skow, Seconded by Senator Lawyer. Motion carried.
Senate Resolution #01-S008, Motion Senator Heath, Second
Senator Fox. Discussion ensued.
President Wright stated that the purpose of the Co-Curricular fund
was never to fund
presentations of papers. He opposes this resolution.
Jack Cook was present
from the Psychology Club and spoke on their behalf. He feels that the
only thing keeping them from being eligible from their papers being
considered a competition is
the title of "conference" since the papers are judged and chosen
to be presented and published.
VP Sonnen recommended
changing the resolution to include other programs that have papers
chosen or published in the same manner.
Motion to table this
resolution was made by Senator Lawyer, Seconded by Senator Heath.
Motion carried.
Senate Applicant Interviews:
Two candidates were interviewed for the academic position in the
Senate. The candidates were Chris Oglesby and Robin Crowe.
Senate Information Reports:
Senator Lawyer talked with
Dave Taylor in the Ed Tech Center regarding the table plates that were
supposed to be put on the tables in MLH130. She had told him that if the
plates were not purchased this semester and he decided later that they
were still needed, then he would need to ask next year's Senate for the
funding. Discussion ensued. It was decided to give him only till the end
of March.
Senator Lawyer also brought up
the issue of funding for Native American Awareness Week. She stated that
since the Senate gave $100 for Martin Luther King & Idaho Human Rights
Day, a one day event, that maybe we could set an amount of $100 per day
for Native American Awareness Week. VP Sonnen stated that she would rather
see the Senate fund each issue not the event. It was decided to have
further discussion on Thursday at Round Table.
VP Sonnen told the Senate that
Marilyn Levine would be at Round Table on Thursday to talk about faculty
salaries. She asked that each ASB Senator send an email to at least two
legislators before Thursday. She will leave a list of legislators Laura's
desk.
Senator Skow announced a
change in the Communication Board schedule. Interviews for the Pathfinder
Editor and Business Manager position will be moved up to March 15th.
Audience Time:
Justice Sheets announced that Justice Montoya had officially resigned as
of today so they are seeking applicants to fill the vacant position. She
also announced that informational meetings regarding elections will be
held on February 20th and 21st in the WCC. The
Judicial Branch will give a $50 gift certificate to the bookstore to the
person who brings the most students to the meeting and a $25 gift
certificate to Sodexho Marriott to the person who brings the next most
people.
Motion to adjourn, Senator Skow, Second Senator Fox.
Meeting Adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
