ASLCSC Senate Meeting Minutes
October 31, 2000
The meeting was called to order at 4:33 p.m.
Present: Alrick, Heath, Lawyer, Ochszner, Skow,
Redford, Steinhauer, McCoy
Absent: Nunez
Approval of Minutes of October 24, 2000:
Motion Senator Heath, Second Senator Lawyer
Minutes approved as written.
Dr. Meier - Will be
leaving tomorrow to attend a conference of the National Association for
Student Affairs Professors, therefore, will be able to attend Round Table
on Thursday. He will have the opportunity to see Dr. Hostetler while at
this conference. He had a brainstorm for ASLCSC to start a Student Tenant
Union. This Union would research student housing availability in the area
(other than on campus). They would then make recommendations to students
and their parents. Other colleges have such a group. He will get further
information and help get it started if we're interested.
Mr. Magruder -
Announcements - SUB Board meets tomorrow at 4:15 p.m. in SUB 225.
Communications Board meets on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in SUB 225.
Executive Reports:
President Wright - Reported that during
the meeting with Frank Bruneel, he was encouraging regarding the new
activity center. He felt there was a 50/50 chance that LCSC would get the
necessary funds the next time around.
Vice President Sonnen -
Reported that there is discussion about reducing the members of the
Faculty Senate. If reduced, it may leave students with only one student
representative. Discussion ensued. The consensus was that students needed
to continue to have two representatives on Faculty Senate.
Senator Lawyer -
Brought up the fact that Workstudy Students, and Honor Students get to
register early, but Student Government members do not. Discussion ensued.
In conclusion, Dr. Meier said that he and Dick Magruder would check into
early registration.
Committee Reports:
Faculty Senate - Vice President Sonnen
stated that the Faculty Senate passed the 10 week withdrawal period. It
was previously 12 weeks.
Library Advisory - Senator McCoy stated that this committee still
has not met.
Craft Fair - Vice President Sonnen reported that
the committee agreed to allow the Alumni Association to sell their
Christmas Ornaments at the Craft Fair and share a booth with ASLCSC.
New Business:
Senate Bill 00-F018, Motion Senator
Heath, Second Senator McCoy. Discussion. 7 yes, 2 no. Bill passed.
Senate Resolution 00-F003, was
withdrawn by the author - Vice President Sonnen. .
Senate Resolution 00-F004,
Motion Senator Alrick, Second Senator Steinhauer. Discussion. Motion to
table this resolution for further discussion. Motion was not seconded. 9
yes, o no, o abstentions. Resolution passed.
Senate Information Reports:
Senator Alrick reported that reservations
have been made at Rooster's Landing on Tuesday, December 5 for 5:30 p.m.
We will have a White Elephant type gift exchange. Limit gift purchase to
$8.00.
Senator Lawyer Read a
statement regarding money spent on student government versus the students.
There had been a previous statement made that $5 was spent on student
government for every
$1 spent for the students. Senator Lawyer's statement indicated a more
even spending level. Senator Lawyer spoke to Frank Bruneel regarding
lobbying. He encouraged students to start lobbying much earlier. Senator
Lawyer spoke to Gene Straughn regarding lobbying by the faculty. Professor
Straughn suggested that student government members attend the Faculty
Association meeting being held on November 9th regarding
lobbying.
Senator Heath reported on the
Security Phone project. The grant she had found is an old one that was due
in 1998. The price she found was $2,300 each and about $1,800 each if you
purchase 10. She is searching for another grant.
Senate Majority Leader - Made
a statement regarding student government spending. He would like the
Senate to put more money toward projects to benefit the students and the
college.
Audience Time:
Justice Sheets - Will discuss the
Election Code and Calendar, and present the Election Survey results at
Round Table on Thursday.
Senator Heath - Announced a
Blood Drive on November 9, 2000. You can sign up in SGC.
Senator Alrick - Announced
that kids can trick or treat in Talkington Hall tonight. Will be a warm,
safe environment.
Motion to adjourn - Senator
Fox, Senator Lawyer Seconded. Meeting adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
