Judicial Communications:
·
.Chief Justice Mosher: The
Judicial Branch is supposed to submit their Bylaws by the fourth meeting of the
semester which is today. What the
Judicial Branch wants to do is submit what is already in the ASB Constitution
as their Judicial Bylaws for now and once the two empty positions are filled
they can get more input and as a group develop the Bylaws. The latest that the Judicial Branch will be
filled is next Friday. She also asked
that if people need rulings or interpretations that they submit a formal letter
so that they can file it and rule on it.
Committee Reports:
·
Computer Allocation Committee:
Senator Rodgers reported. The
committee met on Friday (Senators Rodgers, Caines, Johnson, Munguia) and
discussed the distribution of the computers.
They wrote a bill that is on the agenda later on how the computers were
divided up.
·
Student Affairs: VP Wak Wak
reported. The committee met on
Monday. *One of the issues that was
brought forth was the possibility of making it mandatory for all professors to
provide their syllabus online. There was
really last minute notice as far as the location of the meeting so we were
really shorthanded as far as the people attending the meeting, but the Business
Division said that they do have it required right now, but there are several
other divisions that don’t. Just from
the meeting there was some hesitation for this to go forward but she discussed
and voiced the concerns of the students that there were a lot of online
obligations being placed on the students as opposed to the traditional paper
pushing and that it would be fair that the same type of obligation be put on
the instructors. A possible alternative
to this would be to get the Warrior Web linked up to the Bookstore. The Bookstore requires the faculty to get all
of their reading materials in 3 months prior to the start of the semester. They are thinking that if they (bookstore) had
a complete database where any student could go on and look at any professors’
course number and section and look up any required reading that they would have
under that. Michelle Sotka is the point
person that would be taking care of this and working with Allen Schmook and the
new bookstore manager and see if this would be a possibility, but she will be
out on maternity leave. *Another issue
discussed was Traffic Safety. This was a
concern last year as well. We noticed a
lack of cross walks and blind spots. She
had been in contact with Mike M. with the City and the best that they can tell
us at this point is that any cross walks that were covered up when they did the
chip sealing will be replaced. There is
another person to contact to have additional cross walks laid. Even the old ones that were covered up will
depend on the weather and sweeping process before they can be redone. *Professor Bowen had a question regarding the
parking. He wanted to know how the
students felt about the parking. VP Wak
Wak stated that she told them about the discussion with Dene Thomas. *Alcohol Consumption on School Sponsored
Trips - One of the club advisors wanted to know (and maybe we can initiate a
questionnaire/survey about alcohol consumption on school sponsored trips). It’s become a problem so much to the point
that he as an advisor does not want it allowed.
When he went on a trip out of state he was forced to leave a student
behind in jail. This student was
somebody that told him I’m an adult. You
can’t tell me what to do. I’m on my own
time. VP Wak Wak stated that as a
student herself she is torn. She feels
the same way. that he does, but at the same time on a the road on a trip
students are representing the school.
Right now we are going on really vague state statutes that exist and the
school doesn’t have any set policy on the issue. Any regulation on the issue in that area is
really vague. With as much local, state,
and national competition that our school does it is on and advisor to advisor
basis at this point. What she wanted
know is if student government fine with that?
As an advisor he doesn’t want it to go like that.
Old Business:
A. Online Syllabi Posting Petition – Pamela
Laird: Senator Rodgers review and
discuss to see how we want to
approach this.
·
Senator Coleman – Liked what they were talking about at the Student
Affairs Committee and what VP Wak Wak said
about the fact we are being required as students to do a lot more things on line. We are getting a lot more paperwork
online. They just passed that whole
thing last year about LCWarriormail being the official communication. It is not unexpected that faculty and staff
should follow those same guidelines.
That is a good point that we can make.
·
Senator Rodgers - was able to come in and look at his books two weeks
before class because he lives just down the street. He thinks it would be great to be able to get
online and find what you want before you come to class especially if you are
somebody who lives out-of-state so that they can look at prices of books. Senator Rodgers suggested drafting a
resolution or continuing with the petition drive.
·
Senator Coleman – Drafting a resolution is a good avenue. Probably do need to put it in writing what
our wishes are. Also important that our
representatives bring this up to the Faculty Senate. We are obviously going to get some
resistance.
·
Pam Laird – She stated that she didn’t believe that the issue is with
the instructors because everyone she has asked is willing to provide the
information in advance. The issue is
with the bookstore not being willing to release the information when they
require the information from the instructor three months in advance.
·
President Martinez – In favor of syllabi being posted online. Several professors already do this. This is even a recruitment measure for
students that live across the country.
·
Senator Coleman – While it would be nice do it he is not sure it is the
Bookstore’s responsibility to provide students with this information. Obviously by posting the books online the
bookstore could be hurting its business.
·
Ron Smith – Will look into the Bookstore side of the issue.
New Business:
·
Resolutions Bill 04-F002, Motion to discuss Senator Johnson, Second
Senator Coleman, Motion carries.
Senator Coleman, Second Senator
Johnson. Vote: 6 yes, 0 no, 0 abstentions. Bill passed.
·
Senate Bill 04-F008, Motion Senator Caines, Second Senator Nicholes,
Discussion ensued. Senator Johnson
explained that some requests for computers were thrown out because the
technology and amount of computers requested was way beyond what we had to
disperse. The Rugby Club is the only
club office in the SUB that does not have a computer. The IIE and the LRC are probably the biggest
need for computers. Vote: 6 yes, 0 no, 0
abstentions. Bill passed.
·
Senate Bill 04-F009, Motion, Senator, Coleman, Second Johnson. Discussion:
Senator Caines discussed reservations about getting stuck in a full year
commitment to paying for the Warrior Spotlight ad given that The Pathfinder has
not been reporting on very significant events on this campus. So we did strike down the other bill. This bill locks us into a shorter amount of
time. So we can opt at the beginning of
next semester to pay for the remainder of the year if we wish. I would definitely approve of paying for this
semester. The Editor, Dan Bickerdyke, is
starting to look at the issues that have been raised to him. He is taking steps even now to improve the
reputation of The Pathfinder. Senator
Coleman – Echoed what Senator Caines said.
No problem with a semester worth Discussion continued. *Motion to table til next week Senator
Coleman, Second Senator Johnson, Motion carries.
·
Senate Bill 04-F010, Motion to approve Senator Coleman, Second
Johnson/Nicholes/Munguia. Discussion.
Motion to amend line 16 to read
$600, Senator Johnson, Second Senator
Munguia.
Vote: 6 yes, 0 no, 0 abstentions Motion carries.
Motion to amend line 24 to read
$450, Senator Coleman, the motion was seconded by Senator Johnson
Vote: 4yes, 1 no, 1 abstentions, Motion carries
Senate Information Reports:
·
President Martinez – Clarified that LCSC Day at NIC is October 28 and
not October 26.
·
Senator Rodgers – It would take a unanimous vote to move the Senate
Meeting to
·
Senator Coleman – Brought up the way minutes are distributed. He suggested that Tuesday minutes as well as
Thursday Roundtable Notes be distributed via email. Distribution in this manner would save paper
as well as copy costs. Everyone was in
agreement.
·
Senator Rodgers – The Senate Interview Committee will be conducting
interviews tonight following the meeting.
