ASLCSC Senate Meeting Minutes
October 24, 2000
The meeting was called to order at 4:32 p.m.
Present: Alrick, Heath, Lawyer, Ochszner, Skow,
Redford, Steinhauer, McCoy, Nunez
Approval of Minutes of October 17, 2000:
Motion Senator Heath, Second Senator Nunez. Minutes
approved as written.
Dr. Meier - Has
recently returned from a very good conference regarding student affairs.
He announced that Loren Hajduk has accepted a position at Walla Walla
Community College at Walla Walla. Debi Mundell will fill in while a search
is done to replace Loren. Dr. Meier also reported that a new Assistant
Registrar has been hired. His name is Ryan Gill. He is an Alumni of LCSC.
Mr. Magruder - Announced that
there were now coin return lockers downstairs in the SUB near the ping
pong tables. He stated that he feels that the new Co-Curricular
Competition Fund may have an impact on the ASLCSC budget. He talked
briefly about the Virtual Incubator grant of $500,000. Dr. Meier stated
that it is a grant to encourage e-commerce and to help get businesses into
marketing on the Internet.
Executive Reports:
President Wright - Reported on the State
Board of Education Meeting in Coeur d'Alene that he attended last week. He
spoke about the Differential Mandatory Fee Proposal made by U of I. U of I
also proposed an attempt to change student behavior of not taking early
morning classes by making those classes cheaper. There was much discussion
and a decision to do a feasibility study. Remember the political awareness
events that are scheduled. Mader/McGarry Debate on Thursday, and Bruneel
will be here at lunchtime on Tuesday, October 31st.
Vice President Sonnen -
Reported that Rhett Diessner thanked the Senate for the $100 donation made
to the Martin Luther King Jr. and Idaho Human Rights Day. The inside door
of the Library is not handicap accessible. Debi Mundell is checking into
it. VP Sonnen is going to check into getting the "outpost" near
SGC moved further from the entrance. Smokers tend to hang out around the
outposts near the buildings.
Committee Reports:
Curriculum Committee - Justice Tim Richel
reported on what the committee is working on. They have passed various new
courses and course revisions. He reported on limiting the number of time a
student can withdraw from a class to 3 times. Another issue being
discussed is changing tuition to one price per credit. Also on the table
is changing the current 12 week withdrawal period to 10 weeks. Discussion
ensued. Senator Lawyer suggested writing a resolution to the curriculum
committee regarding student opposition to limiting withdrawals from a
class to 3 times. Also she would like a resolution regarding adding a
German course to the College Curriculum. And another to oppose tuition
changing to one price per credit. Discussion.
New Business:
Senate Bill 00-F015, Motion Senator
Heath, Second Senator Lawyer. Discussion. 7 yes, 3 no. Bill passed.
Senate Bill 00-F016, Motion
Senator Lawyer, Second Senator Fox. Discussion. Senator Redford made a
motion to amend the bill to include expenditures for a second van for
additional students. Second Senator Nunez. 6 yes, 2 abstain, 1 no. Bill
passed.
Senate Bill 00-F017, Motion
Senator Heath, Second Senator Lawyer. Discussion. Motion to amend to
state, "This is expenditure will come out of the General
Account." Senator Alrick, Second Senator McCoy. 10 yes votes, Bill
passed.
Senate Information Reports:
Senator Alrick made a motion to add
Discussion with ASNIC to the November 7th agenda. Seconded by
Senator McCoy. Motion passed.
Senator Nunez requested
the Senators to talk to students about the Radio Club to try and get more
participation. They currently have only 3 members.
Senator Heath has
worked on getting security phones on campus. She has found two to choose
from. She has also found a grant to possibly pay for the project.
Senator Lawyer - Has
been given information that there will be a bus transportation from
Pullman to Spokane when Al Gore is speaking in Spokane. She does not have
any of the details at this time.
Senator Heath -
Requested a male volunteer to help with walkthrough of bathrooms in SGC
and MLH. Senator Fox volunteered.
Audience Time:
Justice Tim Richel - Questions the amount
of money ASLCSC is spending to go to the leadership conference in
Portland. Discussion.
