ASLCSC Senate Meeting Minutes

September 28, 2004

 

The meeting was called to order at 4:30 p.m.

 

Present:  Senators Caines, Coleman, Johnson, King, Munguia, Nicholes, Racich, Rodgers,

              President Martinez, VP Wak Wak, Chief Justice Moser, Senate Secretary Laura Wilson

Absent:  Mr. Williams, Mr. Lytle, Mr. Smith

Audience:  Pam Laird, Will Ferguson, Mike Bybee, Leovardo Diaz

 

Minutes:  September 21, 2004.  Senator Rodgers asked who had received the minutes via email.  Not everyone had.  Senator Coleman made a motion to table the minutes until the next meeting, Senator Johnson seconded the motion.  Motion carries.

 

·         In Mr. Lytles absence Senator Rodgers announced the Night Golf event on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.  There is a $5.00 fee for students.

 

Executive Communications: 

·         President Martinez:  *Discussed a handout of “Ways to Publicize News & Events”.  Alternative route to publicity outsice of having Bruce Twitchell, Media Relations Director do your publicity, however Bruce has the same handout.  *Wanted to let those of you know that were scheduled to meet October 14 at 1:30 with he and the CDA group, that will not be happening.  They apparently have a scheduling conflict.  We are looking for a different time, possibly 3:00 p.m.  Willing to miss class to meet at that time.  He asked if those scheduled for the previous time would be able to make the alternate time.  They said they could or would make the time.  The meeting room will be rescheduled and CDA will be contacted to confirm.  *Taping for Northwest Morning will be tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1:00 p.m.at KLEW for the October 16 Legacy Project Silent Auction that is being developed.  Anyone that wants to go with President Martinez for the taping is invited.  They will talk about the project and possibly other projects, programming or issues that we deal with too.  If anyone is interested just let him know after this meeting.  *Co-curricular Funding proposals are due October 5th at 5:00 p.m. to be submitted on-line.  *Dine with Dene is still scheduled for October 13.  He asked if there was any progress with the contacting prospective legislators.  Senator Rodgers had contacted the campaign coordinators to extend the invitation and is awaiting responses.  *State Board of Education meetings will be here at LCSC on October 21 & 22.  *President Martinez is working through the Office of College Advancement to get naming rights to get naming rights for the Legacy Project contingent upon successful raising of the money.  He is thinking that might be a unique way to address the board on naming rights.  We might think of how to title the project.  The piece itself has a name – The Human Race.  However, the project should have a name.

 

Judicial Communications:

·         Chief Justice Moser – Introduced Leovardo Diaz and stated that Will Ferguson was present last week. Leo and Will are the candidates Chief Justice Moser has  recommended for Associate Justice positions.

Committee Reports: 

·         SUB Board:  President Martinez reported:  He was not in attendance at the meeting, however he reported that the permanent signage discussion was tabled to be discussed at a future meeting. 

·         Student Affairs:  VP Wak Wak announced that the next meeting will be on Monday, October 11 at 4:30 p.m.  for any other person that might be able to fill that vacancy on that committee.  Senator Caines has a conflict at that time.  They would really appreciate more student representation on that committee.

 

New Business:

·         Senate Bill 04-F011, Motion to pass Senator Johnson, Second Senator Nicholes.  Vote:  8 yes.  Bill passed.

·         Senate Bill 04-F013, Motion to pass Senator Caines, Second Senator King.  Discussion:  Senator Rodgers stated that he would prefer the bill to be tabled at this time so that the candidate could be present when the bill is voted on.  A motion was made by Senator Munguia to table the bill until the next meeting.  The motion was seconded by Senator Coleman.  Vote:  7 yes, 1 abstention.  Motion carries.

·         Senate Bill 04-F014, Motion to pass Senator Johnson, Second Senator Nicholes.  Vote:  8 yes.  Bill passed.

·         Senate Bill 04-F015, Motion to pass Senator Johnson, Second Senator Munguia.  Vote:  8 yes.  Bill passed.

·         Senate Bill 04-F016, Motion to pass, Senator Coleman, Second Senator Nicholes:  Vote:  8 yes.  Bill passed.

 

Senate Information Reports: 

·         Senator Coleman:  *Discussed setting up a tour of the Activity Center.  Discussion ensued.  It was decided to try to set up a tour during a Roundtable meeting time and to then invite Jaime White to a Roundtable meeting after having toured the facility.*Senator Coleman suggested sending thank you cards to the city for getting the crosswalks done.  VP Wak Wak stated that she did get a call back from Mike M. with the City who said that they were obligated to replace the crosswalks covered by the chip seal and the new ones did not need to go through planning and zoning and did not really cost much more to do and because they were under pressure from Student Affairs.  VP Wak Wak has the contact information to send a thank you card to.  *Reminder to get the Campus Safety Walk scheduled.  Senator Munguia will get it scheduled.  *Senator Coleman also suggested publicizing the campus escort policy.  This would be a service provided by Security after hours when faculty/staff/students can call Security and request an escort to their car or dorm room.  It was suggested that this be put in the Warrior Spotlight and/or be the Security Tip of the Week.

·         Senator Munguia:  Stephanie Lathrop, CAMP Program Advisor, asked her if Student Government would be interested in doing volunteer work for senior citizens such as washing windows, mowing lawns.  President Martinez stated that he had read the information from Senator Munguia and they are in are one and two man crews for one to three hours.  Please get the information from Senator Munguia.  President Martinez will also pass the information on the Ambassador Honor Society.

·         President Martinez:  Discussed the LCSC Day at NIC agenda that he put in everyone’s mailbox.  This event is on October 28.

 

Audience:

·         Pam Laird:  Discussed issues with the student health insurance and the timeframe in which it is taking to get the prescription coverage and availability of the prescription cards.  Senator Racich volunteered to look into the situation.

 

Motion to adjourn Senator Johnson, Second Senator Mungia.  Motion carries.  +Meeting Adjourned  4:59 p.m.
