Senate Information Reports

President Smith- stated that he got an email from the faculty senate chair and they are looking for contact information on their student representatives for those committees. CD Curd stated he will be going through the committee list to make sure everyone has their committees. If you don’t he will be contacting you.

Media Relations Director O’Harra stated that he has made some changes on the website. If you would like information on there let him know. If you would like a certain picture on the webpage send it to him.

President Smith and Senator Frei signed Bill 07-F002 and CJ Bloomsburg swore in Stephanie Rice as Associate Justice.

Audience Time

Courtney Hill- IT Customer Service Specialist. Introduced herself. She is the lcwarriormail administrator and about a year and a half ago before she was administrator there was a committee formed that included faculty, students and staff, to talk about lcwarriormail. Last year the lcwarriormail cost $38,000 in Student Tech fees. About a year ago they were approached by some students that wanted them to look into different email systems. Working with President Smith right before school ended they decided they would look at systems over the summer and present them at the beginning of the fall semester. Wants to show everyone what they have found and if there are any suggestions she can take them now before they continue on with the project. There are three major stakeholders. Students, faculty and alumni. Will meet with Faculty next week.  Met with Alumni last week. Have met with Administration and they seemed excited about it and want them to continue on with it. Next step will be to have a meeting with the committee which includes ASLCSC members, Marilyn Heckendorn, Holly Patterson McNeil as well as an Alumni representative. There are three contenders: Google mail, Windows Live and Blackboard. Gave a brief overview of what they found. Google mail is free. Blackboard they don’t have a quote for yet. Windows Live will cost $12,000 for the servers. Google mail is hosted online. University of Idaho went with Windows Live. Once they get the committee together they can go over the numbers a little more. Windows Live is out of BETA…but there are still parts of it that are in BETA. Google mail is at the about same place. There is a chance that in the future the college would have to pay for servers. Would have to pay close attention to the contract. Originally lcwarriormail was free and then the college got charged for it. The college will have to decide what the domain will be for the email addresses. There are a lot of things the committee is going to have to decide on. Would like to have some forums for student input once the committee is a little further along. President Smith stated that when he talked to Jerry, Jerry stated that the email is not as integrated as they would like. Also stated that the price may be rather high for Blackboard. Courtney said that when LC went to Blackboard last year they bought servers for it. To use the Blackboard email they will have to host the Blackboard with them. There will be no price break for LC if LC goes with Blackboard. Would like to get the committee together by the seventh of September. Will have to meet quite a bit to discuss all of the issues and will have to set up criteria for judging the email systems. President Smith asked if any of them felt like they may end up with a large fee for use. Courtney responded that “you don’t get that feel” but you think that it’s too good to be true, she also stated that she doesn’t know what their contract says. So far Google mail has been out for a year and a half and they have been free the entire time, “Whether that will change…I don’t know.” Courtney stated that the review will take the committee to the end of September. Will send out a questionnaire and article in the Pathfinder. Through October and November will be compiling results. At the end of November will present a system proposal to Administration. President Smith stated that he thought it would be a good idea to get a technical and an academic faculty to sit on the committee and it would also be a good idea to get someone who uses warriormail in their classroom. Brandon asked how much capability there will be to do bulk emailing. Courtney stated that most emailing programs are getting away from the bulk emails as most email systems mark those as spam. Can look at different list serves which will be comparable. Will also have to address the clubs that use the warriormail. Jerry Hindberg will be taking over the project plan. The problems with warriormail are the storage capabilities, the price and the user non-friendliness. Warriormail also has no POP capabilities. Courtney stated that she will support whatever is chosen. There is an opportunity to get more storage space for lcwarriormail; it will run $800 for 25 GB which comes out to thousands of dollars to give everyone 2 GB of space.

Terri Stamper- Business Manager for the Pathfinder. Welcome back, glad to see so many new faces. Here to request the ASLCSC continue doing the Warrior Spotlight. $750 for semester. 15 issues a semester. Will be able to keep the back page. Discussed color and the fact that the Warrior Spotlight got bumped when there was a color issue. Matt Wilson stated that he was not aware that was a huge deal to the Senate. Now that he knows…the Warrior Spotlight will not be bumped.

Ernie Williams reported that the Athletics Dept is anxious to work with groups on campus to boost attendance at the games. Have worked really hard to identify a new Warrior Zone. Will be putting the Warrior Zone on the West side in the reserve area of the gym. Anything that this group would like to input would be appreciated.
