Madrid and O'Leary Lead L-C Past WOU, 8-7
LEWISTON,ID--Mike Madrid and Brandon OLeary hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead second-ranked Lewis-Clark State College to an 8-7 NAIA Region I win over Western Oregon University, Friday night, at Harris Field.
The Warriors (44-12) never led until a three-run outburst in the sixth inning put L-C ahead. Yoshi Kimura ripped a single back up the middle, scoring Nick Walker from third and just barely scoring Nick Bullen from second. Bullen just eluded WOU catcher Toby Bottorff who received the throw from center fielder Joey Price just up the third base line, but almost nailed Bullen. Kimura just snuck into second base as Bottorff tried to put him out at second.
Madrid went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Kimura had a pair of singles and two RBI for LCSC. Ben Royce (3-0) pitched 2.1 innings of solid relief, yielding only one hit and striking out three batters. Collin Perschon struggled, giving up 11 hits and seven runs, but did strike out nine batters.
Travis Anderson and Bottorff led Western Oregon (31-13) with three hits apiece. Bottorff collected a pair of doubles and Anderson tallied a pair of RBI. Josh Nelson (3-2) picked up the loss in relief in three innings of work.
LCSC outfielder Matt Hellman had his 26-game hitting streak snapped. He now holds the second longest hitting streak in school history.
The same two teams will play at 3:00 p.m., Saturday at Harris Field.
