Warriors Outlast Cougars, 13-10
LEWISTON,ID--Lewis-Clark State scored five runs in the first and three more in the second and then held off Washington State for a 13-10 victory at Harris Field, Wednesday night. The Warriors sweep the five-game season series against the Cougars. That is the first time L-C has swept a season series against WSU since 1997.
Lewis-Clark State (50-12) used seven different pitchers with Ryan Heitmann (4-1) picking up the win in relief, after going 1.2 innings and striking out four of the six batters he faced. Nick Gravelle came on in the eighth to shut the door and pick up his third save of the year.
Nick Walker got things started early for the Warriors with a two-run double in the top of the first. Mike Madrid added a two-run single later in the inning.
Matt Hellman ripped his eighth home run of the year in the bottom of the second, a two-run shot to put L-C ahead 8-1.
Washington State (15-36) pulled to within one run in the fourth with a six-run outburst. Mike Knight hit a double to right center, plating two runs to pull the Cougars to within two. A passed ball allowed the sixth run of the inning to score.
Lewis-Clark State put Washington State away with a three-run eighth. Yoshi Kimura hit a three-run blast into the left field bleachers putting the Warriors ahead 13-9.
Justin Cayetano (3-4) pitched only one inning, the first, giving up five earned runs. Three more WSU pitchers followed.
Wednesday night’s game was the regular-season finale for
second-ranked (NAIA) Lewis-Clark State College. The Warriors host the 45th Avista NAIA
World Series starting Friday, May 25th. Washington State finishes its season this weekend
with a three-game set, at home, against #5 Stanford.
