Hellman Selected by the San Diego Padres

Lewiston, ID-Lewis-Clark State College outfielder Matt Hellman (Burbank, CA/Glendale College) was selected in the 26th Round, overall pick number 780, by the San Diego Padres. He becomes the sixth player selected off the 2001 NAIA National runners-up team.

Hellman led the Warriors in several offensive categories: batting average, .381; runs scored, 68; hits, 102; doubles, 22; runs batted in, 67; total bases, 156; total plate appearances, 302; at bats, 268; games played, 67; and, games started, 64. He committed only one error in 117 total chances, for a .991 fielding percentage.

Yesterday, pitcher Wes Hutchison (Burbank, CA/Glendale College) was selected in the 10th Round, pick number 316, by the San Francisco Giants. Another L-C hurler J.R. Crider (Phoenix, AZ/Phoenix College) was selected in the 11th Round, pick number 341, by the Oakland Athletics. The third Warrior pitcher taken was Chris Mabeus (Soldotna, AK/Eastern Arizona College), taken in the 13th round, the 401st overall selection in the draft, also by the Oakland Athletics. Catcher Trevor Brown (Eugene, OR/Lane CC) was selected in the 17th Round, the 510th selection, by the San Diego Padres. The last player taken off of the Warriors was pitcher Ben Royce (Boise, ID/Treasure Valley CC). He was also selected in the 17th Round, the 519th overall selection, by the Seattle Mariners.
