LCSC Outslugs Whitman, 15-8

LEWISTON,ID--Mark Gallagher’s RBI double in the fifth gave seventh-ranked Lewis-Clark State a lead it would never relinquish in a 15-8 slugfest win over Whitman College, Wednesday night, at Harris Field. The two teams combined for 27 runs and 30 hits. The Warriors have now beaten the Missionaries 25-consecutive times.

In that same inning, Micah Furtado belted a three-run homer, his sixth of the year, to push Lewis-Clark State’s (24-10) lead to 11-7. On the night, Furtado went 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. Mike Madrid was 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring two runs and drove in another. Gabe Stajduhar hit a two-run blast, his sixth, in a seven-run second inning. Gallagher, Zeph Zinsman, and Nick Walker all had two hits apiece.

Kevin Welch (3-0) picked up the win in relief. He went 2.2 innings, scattering two hits and mowed down three batters.

Ryan Toivola and Adam Zaitz each tallied three hits apiece for Whitman College (8-17). Zaitz collected three doubles and one RBI while Toivola had two singles and a double. Sean Kinney, David Fee, and Danny Richards each had two hits. Both Kinney and Richards hit solo home runs.

Mark Hinshaw (0-2) picked up the loss, hurling 2.2 innings in relief. Starter Toivola tossed two innings and gave up seven earned runs.

Lewis-Clark State travels to LaGrande, Ore. to take on Eastern Oregon University, tomorrow, for a 2:00 PM game. Whitman returns to Northwest Conference play with a 1:00 PM doubleheader at home, against Willamette University, Saturday.
