LCSC Scores Five in Eighth Inning to Win, 10-5

LEWISTON,ID--The seventh-ranked Lewis-Clark State College Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak with a 10-5 win over Western Baptist College, Friday night, at Harris Field.

Paul Gallegos led Lewis-Clark State (21-10) with four hits, all singles, and two runs scored. Tory Haven continued his hitting streak, now at 16 games, going 3-for-4, belting a solo home run in the fifth. Andy Torres started for the Warriors, going 6.1 innings and scattering nine hits and striking out six batters. Of the 80 pitches he threw, only 12 were outside the strike zone. Kevin Welch (2-0) got the win in relief, pitching 2.2 innings of one-hit baseball.

LCSC got on the board in the bottom of the third when Zeph Zinsman drove a ball into right, scoring two runs. Brendan Ryan later drove home Zinsman to put L-C up 3-1. Single runs in the fourth and the fifth put the Warriors ahead by four, but Western Baptist (15-12) countered with a four-run seventh, chasing Torres. Dustin Purnell drove in two runs with a double down the rightfield line. Nate Mayben greeted reliever Welch with a two-run triple to tie the game at five.

The L-C bats got going in the bottom of the eighth when leadoff hitter Nick Walker singled to center. With a light raining falling at Harris Field, Micah Furtado lay down a perfect bunt past the mound to put runners at first and second. Gallegos followed with another spectacular bunt down the third base line, beating the throw by a step. Mike Madrid came up next, facing a drawn in infield, and hit a shot to first baseman Jason Brownell. He made a great stop, but threw off balance to home plate, pulling catcher Erik Gillam off the plate, allowing the run to score. Zinsman stepped up to the plate and hit a shot off of reliever Jeff Tollison (1-1) over the centerfield wall for a grand slam.

Beau Batsell led Western Baptist with three hits and two runs scored.

The same two teams will meet in a noon doubleheader tomorrow.
