Cougars Hold On for 9-7 Win

PULLMAN,WA--Washington State snapped sixth-ranked Lewis-Clark State’s three-game winning streak with a 9-7 victory, Saturday night at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Washington State (19-27) got nine hits from nine different batters in the game. The biggest hit came when pinch hitter Bruce Jacobsen blasted a grand slam to left center, putting the Cougars ahead 9-3. Eddie Bonine (7-7) had to hold off a Lewis-Clark State (34-15) comeback in the ninth, for the complete game win.

In the top of the ninth, Micah Furtado led off with a single, followed by a pinch hit by Emerson Frostad. Mike Madrid then walked, loading the bases, and Brendan Ryan extended his hitting streak to 13-games with an RBI single to center. Zeph Zinsman followed by hitting a ground ball to shortstop, just to the left of second base, and Derek Bruce let the ball skip by him, scoring Frostad and Madrid. Ryan went all the way to third on the erroneous play by Bruce. Gabe Stajduhar grounded to short, scoring Ryan, cutting the WSU lead to only two. But, Bonine struck out Mark Gallagher and then got Matt Morgan to ground out to third to end the game.

Furtado opened the scoring in the game with a solo homer to right to lead off the fourth inning. Tim Petke (4-4) was sidled with the loss after pitching five innings.

The same two team meet at Bailey-Brayton Field at 1:00 PM. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Northwest.
