Torres Named Region I MVP
LEWISTON, ID-Lewis-Clark State College right-handed pitcher Andy Torres (Bell Gardens, CA/Arizona State University/East Los Angeles College/Bell Gardens HS) was named NAIA Region I Baseball Player of the Year, Tuesday, May 14. Five Warriors were selected to the All-Region I team.
Torres (8-0, 3,13 ERA) was the mainstay for the Warriors pitching staff this season. Going into the World Series, he leads the staff in: wins, 8; appearances, 17; games started, 13; innings pitched, 92.0; and, strike outs, 74. Torres tossed 6.1 innings of no-hit ball against highly regarded, and now Top 25 team, San Jose State.
Gabe Stajduhar (Chehalis, WA/Lower Columbia College/W.F. West HS) earns his second All-Region I award, in as many years. He finished the regular season with a .345 batting average, eight home runs, and 28 RBI. Stajduhar has picked off two runners this season, and has also caught 13 base runners trying to steal a base. Mike Madrid (Silver City, NM/El Paso CC/Cobre HS) was tabbed the region’s top first baseman. He batted .325 with ten homers and 36 RBI. Earlier this month, he tied school single-game records in at bats with eight, and base hits with six. Redshirt freshman Micah Furtado (Kapa’a, HI/Kapa’a HS) has made an immediate impact on the Warrior line up. He has had a hitting streak of 14 games, already this season, and is currently on a 10-game tear. So far, Furtado is leading the team with a .404 average and has collected a team-high 67 hits. Junior college transfer Tory Haven (Salem, OR/Highline CC/South Salem HS) has lived up to his preseason billing. He leads the team with 17 home runs, and has the team’s longest hitting streak of the season, 17 games. Torres rounds out the Warrior contingent.
Others selected to the All-Region I team were: Scott Skeen and Chris Eggleston, Albertson; Adam Campbell, Jeff Francis, and Brooks McNiven, British Columbia; Jesse Harrington and Chris Baird, Concordia (OR); Tommy Porter, Eastern Oregon; Matt Lowe and Brad Foss, Northwest Nazarene; Beau Batsell and Sam Owre, Western Baptist.
The members of the All-Region team are now eligible for NAIA All-America accolades.
