Baysinger among area players taken in draft; Cougars' Chamberlin, Richardson selected; L-C's Allen, Best go in 16th round

Lewis-Clark State and Washington State each had two players selected during the first day of the major league baseball draft on Tuesday. Former Moscow High standout Trent Baysinger was taken as well.

Bryce Chamberlin, a right-handed pitcher for the Cougars, was taken in the sixth round by the Baltimore Orioles, who made him the 169th pick overall.

WSU junior first baseman Grant Richardson was next to go, taken in the 14th round (No. 406 overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Meanwhile, both L-C players were selected in the 16th round -- Kyle Allen, a left-handed pitcher, went to the Philadelphia Phillies (No. 482) and catcher Tyler Best was selected by Oakland (No. 487).

Baysinger, who pitched the past two seasons for the University of Washington, was taken by the Orioles in the 18th round (No. 529). Washington wrapped up its season with a 12-3 loss to Tulane in the NCAA Regionals on Sunday in Oxford, Miss. Baysinger, a senior, went 3-4 on the year with a 4.12 ERA.

Chamberlin, a junior who missed almost a month of the season with a broken jaw, led WSU pitchers with eight wins. He notched a 5.34 ERA in 623 innings.

Richardson, who hails from Richland, Wash., led the Cougars in home runs (13) and RBI (68). His .311 average was good for fourth on the team.

Allen, a junior from Sancho Margarita, Calif., went 7-2 for the Warriors with a 3.28 ERA. He struck out a team-high 59 batters while walking just 12 in 58l innings.

Best, a Tacoma, Wash. native, hit .295 this past season. He and Brandon Morris led the team in home runs with 15. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior also had 45 RBI.

In addition to Allen and Best, five players who took part in the recently concluded NAIA World Series were selected. Oklahoma City's Grant Hansen, a right-handed pitcher, was the first taken, going to the Chicago White Sox in the third round. Three other Stars were selected: Joe Bisenius by Philadelphia in the 12th round, shortstop Denver Kitch by Baltimore in the 13th round and right-handed pitcher Joey McLaughlin went to Toronto in the 18th round.

San Diego took Point Loma Nazarene right-hander Mike Ekstrom in the 13th round.

The draft, which concludes today, consists of 50 rounds.
