Warriors announce 2006 Recruiting Class

Lewiston, ID-  Head Warrior baseball coach Ed Cheff announced the signing of new recruits for the 2006 baseball season.  Following the loss of ten seniors to graduation and six players to the 2005 MLB Amateur draft this past summer, Cheff has added a strong mix of both junior college transfers and high school standouts to the new roster.     

Paul Martin comes to L-C from Kennewick, WA where he attended Kamiakin high school.  A three-sport standout, Paul received accolades this past season as all-league first team in basketball and baseball, while also receiving recognition as an all-state baseball player at the 4A high school level.  The 6’ 1” right-handed centerfielder hit .421, while batting in 21 runs and stealing 14 stolen bases this past spring.  “Paul is an outstanding athlete and student” stated assistant baseball coach Gary Picone.  “He’s a player that was recruited by most of the D-I schools in the northwest and we feel fortunate to have him.  He’s got a bright future in our program” Martin is not only a standout in the field but also in the classroom, where he graduated with a 3.8 GPA.  He is pursuing a pre-dentistry degree during his 4-year tenure at Lewis-Clark State College.

Shannon Wirth joins the Warrior roster as a transfer from Mt.  Hood Community College.  A native of Troutdale, OR, Wirth has received recognition everywhere he’s been in his athletic career.  A graduate of Reynolds high school, while there was named 1st team all-league and 1st team all state in baseball.  Wirth’s numbers his first year at Mt.  Hood C.C included 14 appearances in 88 innings of work, with an overall record of 8-2 and an ERA of 1.53.  These numbers earned him 1st team all-league, 1st team All-NWAACC and NWAACC All-tournament honors.  In 2005, Wirth continued his dominance where he went 8-1, striking out 84 batters and holding an ERA of 2.09.  In 2005, Wirth was named to the NWAACC south region all-star team.  Assistant coach Gary Picone had this to say about Shannon, “He’s one of the best pitchers coming out of the NWAACC.  He’s  had a great summer in Alaska pitching for the gold panners and we expect good things from him this fall”.  The 6’2” right-handed pitcher enters the 2006 season as a junior for the Warriors.

Jessi Mier transfers to Lewis-Clark State from Irvine Valley Community College in southern California.  The right-handed catcher was named to the 2005 all-conference team, where he hit .270 with 28 RBI’s, 9 doubles and 2 HR’s. “We believe he gives us the kind of catching we need for the upcoming year” stated Picone.  The 6 ‘1 “ 200 lb catcher joins L-C with 2 years of playing eligibility.
