LCSC defeats Linfield 7-6 in 14 innings

4-5-07

LEWISTON, Idaho -- Beau Mills' NAIA-leading 97th RBI couldn't have come at a better time as his run-scoring single down the right-field line in the  bottom of the 14th inning gave the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team a 7-6 win over Linfield College in a non-league contest at LCSC's Harris Field on Saturday afternoon.

After Jesse Roehl popped out to short to start the bottom of the 14th, Mark Thompson collected his first hit of the game with a single, and Brent Wyatt followed with a walk. With the count at 1-1, Mills drilled his game-ending hit for his lone RBI of the day.

The win improves LCSC to 47-4 heading into its final regular-season home contest. The Warriors will take on Linfield, 22-15, again on Sunday at noon. LCSC then ends the regular season on Tuesday at Washington State in Pullman.

LCSC will begin postseason play on Thursday in the four-team Region I tournament, which will be held in Caldwell. Albertson College will serve
(Mark Thompson scores the winning run off of a Beau Mills single           as host after splitting a doubleheader

in the bottom of the 14th inning)                                              with the University of British Columbia
on Saturday. The split gave Albertson first place in the Region I standings (LCSC does not play a league schedule and is not allowed to host the region tournament). The double-elimination region tournament will continue through Saturday with the winner advancing to the Super Regionals the following week.

The Warriors, the top-ranked team in the NAIA, overcame a season-high six errors in Saturday's game, which led to all but one Linfield run being earned.

LCSC scored three run in the first inning and added two in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. Linfield, an NCAA Division III team, took the lead with a four-run seventh inning, but LCSC tied the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh. The two teams failed to score a run for the next six innings until LCSC finally won the game.

Both teams had chances. Linfield left 14 runners stranded on base, including two in each of the 11th and 13th innings, while LCSC left 10.

LCSC used six pitchers in the contest, including Chris Kissock, who pitched the final inning to earn the win. The junior right-hander improved to 11-1 on the season after making just his second relief appearance of the season. He went one inning and allowed one hit, but struck out two.

The Warriors took a 3-0 lead in the first when Wyatt reached on a fielder's choice and Mills was hit by a pitch to set up a two-run double by Jessie Mier. After a wild pitch moved Mier to third, Kyle Green's sacrifice fly RBI scored Mier.

LCSC made it 5-2 in the sixth with a pair of runs, both coming with two outs. Mier reached on a fielding error, and a single by Greene and a walk to Mike Rivera loaded the bases. Joey Briggs singled to right to drive in two.

The Warriors helped Linfield take the lead by committing three errors in the top of the seventh. Stew Davis added a two-run double and finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Wyatt's seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field, tied the game in the seventh.

Mills and Wyatt had two hits apiece to pace the Warriors' 10-hit attack. Mier and Briggs both finished with two RBI.

LCSC pitchers allowed only three hits in the final seven innings.

Today's game will be the final game for Scott Carnahan as coach at Linfield. Carnahan is retiring after 24 years at the college and has a record of 562-376-2 at Linfield.
