Miller and LCSC shut down Albertson 4-1

4-21-07

Mike Miller (left) tossed a three-hitter and struck out six to lift the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team to its ninth straight win with a 4-1 triumph over Albertson College in Region I play at LCSC's Harris Field on Saturday afternoon.

Miller, 3-0 overall, pitched only the second complete game of the season for the Warriors. The senior right-hander from Dos Palos, Calif., took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and lowered his earned run average to 2.76 on the season by dominating the Coyote lineup.

Miller's performance moved LCSC, the NAIA's top-ranked team, to 37-3 overall and 17-1 in Region I play. No. 21-ranked Albertson, which has lost all seven meetings with LCSC this season, is 24-12 overall and 14-9 in Region I action.

Miller's outing overshadowed a fine performance by Albertson pitcher Andrew Brock (4-3).  Brock gave up seven hits and four earned runs in the eight innings, and struck out one and walked two.

The Warriors got on the board first when Mark Thompson hit a two-out single in the bottom of the third and scored on a double by Brent Wyatt. LCSC made it 2-0 in the fourth when Paul Martin homered for the second consecutive game, a solo shot to left-center field for his second home of the season.

The Warriors' final two runs came in the sixth. martin started the rally with a single, and Zach Evangelho followed with a two-run home run to right field. It was Evangelho's first home run of the season.

After retiring the first 15 Coyote batters in order, Miller was greeted by a single from Bryan Champ to begin the sixth inning.

Albertson scored its run in the seventh when Pat Burke was hit by a pitch. Richie Snider singled him to second, and with two outs, Luke Howarth singled to center to score Burke.

LCSC junior third baseman Beau Mills went 1-for-1 with a single to stretch his consecutive game hitting streak to 19. Mills also walked twice and was hit by a pitch.

Martin led LCSC at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. He was the only player in the game with more than one hit.

The two teams face off again on Sunday at noon to complete the three-game series.
