Pitching staff dominates Saturday
doubleheader
3-10-07
The Lewis-Clark State College pitching
staff continued to put up impressive
numbers as the Warriors swept a
doubleheader from Concordia of Portland,
Ore., by scores of 9-4 and 8-0 at
Lewiston's Harris Field on Saturday.
Four Warrior pitchers only allowed three
earned runs on the day as the Warriors'
pitching staff dropped its earned run
average to 1.77 on the season.
The victories helped LCSC, ranked No. 1
in the NAIA, improve to 15-1 on the
season and stretch its win streak to
three games. The 9-4 win is only the
second time this season LCSC has won by
less than six runs.
Matt Fitts (3-0) and Mike Miller held
the Cavaliers in the check in the
opening game by combining on an
eight-hitter. Fitts went 5.1 innings and
allowed six hits and two runs, with one
walk and six strikeouts. Miller, making
his season debut after elbow surgery in
the fall, pitched the final 3.2 innings
and allowed two hits and two runs, but
only one was earned. He also struck out
six.
The Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead
after three innings of the opener. Mark
Thompson, who had a stellar game
defensively in center field, hit a home
run to lead off the bottom of the first
and Kyle Greene added a solo shot in the
second. Joey Briggs keyed a three-run
third inning with a two-run double.
LCSC led by as much as 9-2 before
Concordia scored twice in the ninth.
Briggs finished with three RBI, while
Thompson, Greene, Beau Mills and Paul
Martin had two hits apiece. Thompson,
Mills and Greene also scored twice.
In the second game, junior right-hander
Chris Kissock (4-0) cruised through the
first seven inning and allowed six hits
and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Brian Parker completed the Warriors'
fourth shutout of the season by allowing
one hit in the final two innings with
four strikeouts. In all, the four
Warrior pitchers recorded 23 strikeouts
on the day.
LCSC scored two runs apiece in the third
and fourth innings and added three in
the fifth to put the game away. Mike
Rivera drove in both runs in the fourth
with a double, while Jesse Roehl clubbed
a three-run home run to right in the
fifth.
Zach Evangelho had three hits to pace
the Warriors, while Brent Wyatt drove in
two runs. Every Warrior starter had at
least one hit in the game.
The Warriors and the Cavaliers complete
their four-game series with a single
game at noon on Sunday.
