Warriors over Concordia 15-2 in series opener

3-10-07

Chris Schwinden (left) and Will Morgan combined on a five-hitter and the offense enjoyed another strong day at the plate as the Lewis-Clark State College baseball team rolled past Concordia University of Portland 15-2 Friday in the opening game of a four-game series at LCSC's Harris Field.

The Warriors, 13-1 overall and ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, have now won 12 games by at least six runs this season.

In this game, the Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead and answered a two-run Concordia rally with eight runs in seventh inning to cruise to the win.

Schwinden and Morgan again looked sharp. Schwinden improved to 2-0 on the season by allowing four hits through the first six innings. He gave up two runs and three walks, but struck out seven. Morgan picked up his third save of the season by allowing just one hit in the final three innings. He also struck out three.

Concordia starter Bryan Goff allowed 10 hits and seven runs in 5.2 innings, and reliever Ryan Preston was hurt by the Concordia defense, which committed four errors. Preston pitched only one-third of an inning, but gave up one hit and four walks. The Warriors scored seven runs off of Preston, but only two were earned.

LCSC had several strong performances at the plate. Jessie Mier went 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Eric Epperson added three hits. Zach Adam, Mark Thompson and Ikaika Lester all drove in two runs, while Beau Mills went 2-for-4 and scored three times.

The Warrior struck for three runs in the second when Kyle Greene doubled and Zach Evangelho walked. Thompson followed with a two-run triple and scored on a throwing error.

A fielding error led to two runs in the third as Mier brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Epperson added an RBI double to make it 5-0.

LCSC added two more in the sixth when Mills started a two-out rally with a single and Lester followed with a two-run home run to center field, his first homer of the season.

After Concordia made it 7-2, the Warriors struck for their big inning, scoring eight runs on four hits, two errors and four walks. Kyle Melton drove in the first run on a bases-loaded walk and the next two runs scored on a pair of errors. Mills then drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run, while Mier added a two-run double. Zach Adam finished the scoring with a two-run single.

The two teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then meet at noon in a single game on Sunday.
