LCSC dominates British Columbia doubleheader

3-22-08

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State College baseball team collected 44 hits and outscored the University of British Columbia 34-8 in sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader 11-0 and 23-8 at LCSC’s Harris Field.

With the wins L-C improves to 24-2 and extends its winning streak to 18—its longest winning streak since it won 26 straight in 2006. The loss brings UBC to 13-11 on the season, with an 0-7 record this year at Harris Field.

Michael Guerrero highlighted the first game by pitching his second straight complete game shutout, while the second game featured a 16-run third inning. Although numerous Warriors had multi-hit games, Kyle Greene’s three home runs, eight RBI, six runs scored and 7-for-8 hitting led the way on an outstanding day at the plate.

Guerrero cruised in the first game and gave up only four hits, and struck out five. He retired 11 straight batters between the third and seventh innings. Guerrero is the first Warrior to throw back to back complete game shutouts since Andy Torres did it in 2002.

In game one, the Warriors got things started offensively in the second inning when two Thunderbird errors and three hits put L-C up 3-0. British Columbia committed four errors in the first game, and four errors in the second game.

Hits continued to come in bunches for the Warriors, as three hits led to one run in the third, two hits, one of which was a solo home run by Brent Wyatt (shown above), brought two runs in the fourth, and five hits, including a two-run homer by Greene, added five runs in the sixth.

In the first game, Ricky Reavis went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Greene had three hits, and Brian Ward, Mickey Pingree, and Mike Rivera all finished with two hits apiece.

Greene now has a .437 average, and leads the team with seven home runs.

Mark Hardy picked up the loss for UBC. Hardy gave up 13 hits and 10 runs in five and one third innings pitched.

In the second game, Warrior pitchers Blaine Hardy and Kevin Camacho threw five and two innings, respectively, in a game which ended by the mercy rule in the seventh inning.

The four runs L-C scored in the first inning, including two on a home run by Greene, was overshadowed by the 16 runs it scored in the third. Twenty-one Warriors came to the plate in the inning, which saw the Warriors collect 16 hits. LCSC ended up falling just one run short of tying its all-time record of 17 runs scored in an inning.

Lewis-Clark State added a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth to end the game with 23 runs on 26 hits. LCSC’s all-time record for runs in a game stands at 36 (set in 1997 versus Southern Utah), and the Warrior record for hits in a game remains at 29 (1987).

Greene, who finished with two home runs and six RBI in the game, Ikaika Lester, and Pingree all finished with four hits. They went a combined 12-for-12 and drove in 13 runs. Josh Ashenbrenner also added three hits and two RBI, and Brent Wyatt, Paul Martin, Brian Ward, and Chris Valencia all had two hits apiece.

The final game of the four game series will start at noon on Sunday. Prior to the game, starting at 10 a.m. at Harris Field, the Lewis-Clark State College athletic department and baseball team will hold an Easter Egg hunt for children age 12-and-under.
