LCSC piles it on again to thump UBC 13-6

 3-23-08

LEWISTON, Idaho - Kyle Greene kept up his torrid hitting and Ikaika Lester drove in four runs as the Lewis-Clark State lineup continued to make mince meat of University of British Columbia pitching with a 13-6 victory on Sunday at LCSC's Harris Field.

The win completes a four-game sweep for the Warriors over UBC and pushes LCSC's win streak to 19 games. The Warriors collected 71 hits in the series and outscored UBC 58-17.  The Warriors registered double digits in runs and hits in all four games.

LCSC has now scored 88 runs in its last six games (14.7 runs per game average) and 158 runs in its last 12 games (13.2 average)

The NAIA's top-ranked team is now 25-2 on the season, while UBC, which has lost five straight, falls to 13-12 overall.

Since opening play against Region I teams on March 11, Greene is hitting .600. The senior first baseman/designated hitter from Lewiston is 21-of-35 at the plate with 17 runs and 22 RBI.  On Sunday, Greene went 2-for-4, scored once, and drove in a pair of runs. He finished the four-game series at 9-of-17 with seven runs scored, 10 RBI and three home runs.

Lester, a senior third baseman, went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. He hit his third home run of the season to help LCSC race out to an 8-0 lead after two innings and cruise to the win.

Junior pitcher Nick Masters picked up the win to improve to 3-0 on the season. He was touched for four runs in the fifth, and Matt Stabelfeld came on to pitch the final four innings. Stabelfeld gave up five hits and one earned run, but struck out six.

The Warriors wasted little time in jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Brent Wyatt opened the frame with a walk, Paul Martin followed with a single, and Brian Ward brought both in with a double. Lester followed with an RBI double and eventually scored on Bret Spencer's single.

LCSC added four more in the second. Wyatt again led off the inning with a walk and Martin followed with a single. Greene singled to right to score Wyatt, and with two outs, Lester hit a three-run home run to right field.

The Warriors made it 9-4 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Josh Ashenbrenner.

LCSC added two  apiece in the seventh and eighth innings. Greene's RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Ward drove in the two runs in the seventh, while Chris Valencia and Wyatt had RBI doubles in the eighth.

UBC used five pitchers in the game, including former Warrior Ashton Florko, who gave up three hits and two runs in the seventh inning. UBC starter Kurtis Schumacher, who pitched one and two-thirds innings in Saturday's 23-8 shellacking and gave up seven hits and six runs on 41 pitches, didn't fare much better on Sunday. Again he pitched one and two-thirds innings and allowed nine hits and eight runs (seven earned), along with two walks.

The Warriors resume action on Tuesday when they play host to Concordia for a three-game series. Tuesday's contest is at 6 p.m., and will be followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
