LCSC signs two area high school players

 3-29-08

The Lewis-Clark State College baseball team has announced the signing of two high school baseball players with Lewiston High pitcher Brett Watson (shown left) and Lake City shortstop Trent Bridges, Warrior assistant coach Gus Knickrehm announced.

Both are seniors this spring and will join the Warriors for workouts in the fall.

Watson is a left-handed pitcher who struck out 17 batters last Saturday in a seven-inning win over Coeur d’Alene High. The 17 strikeouts are a career-high for Watson, who is 2-0 on the season.

Watson’s high school coach and American Legion coach is former Warrior Tom Grunenfelder, who told the Lewiston Tribune last summer that he believes Watson is “going to be as good a pitcher as we’ve had come out of this program since I’ve been here.”

Watson was a second-team all-Inland Empire League selection last season and helped Lewiston High to a second-place finish in the Idaho State 5A Tournament.

The team Lewiston lost to in the title game was Lake City, which used two hits from Bridges to beat Lewiston 7-1. Bridges (shown left) was a first-team all-Inland Empire League selection last season.

Bridges also started on the Timberwolves’ basketball team and played in the District 1 All-Star Game.

“These are two of the top high school prospects in the state,” Knickrehm said. “Watson is probably one of the best left-handed pitchers in the state and Bridges is one of the top hitters.”
