Mills sees action in
Indians’ exhibition
games
After
being held out of the
Cleveland Indians’ first
exhibition game of the
season, former Lewis-Clark
State College baseball
player Beau Mills has
appeared in the Indians’
next four exhibition games,
all as a substitute at first
base.
Mills, who was the MVP of
both the NAIA and the Avista
NAIA World Series a year
ago, went 1-for-2 in his
first two games, and then
0-1 in the next two.
Entering Tuesday’s player,
he was 2-for-6 on the
season.
Mills became the first
Warrior to be selected in
the first round of the Major
League draft last summer
when he was selected by
Cleveland with the 13th pick
overall. Mills started
playing with Mahoning Valley
Scrappers last summer and
was eventually promoted to
Lake City and then Kingston,
the Indians top Class A
team.
Mills combined to hit .261
(64-of-245) with 20 doubles
and six home runs last
summer.
The Indians invited Mills to
spring training as a
non-roster invitee. He is
the youngest of the
non-roster invitees.
Mills said earlier this year
he wasn’t sure where he
would start this season, but
will likely be with either
the Akron Aeros, the
Indians’ AA team, or perhaps
with the Buffalo Bisons, the
club’s AAA team.
Three other Warriors are
trying to stay in the big
leagues. Keith Foulke, who
came out of retirement to
sign a one-year deal with
the Oakland Athletics
earlier this year, has yet
to play in an exhibition
game.
The other two players are
non-roster invitees, Jason
Ellison, an outfielder with
Texas, and Vic Darensbourg,
a pitcher with Philadelphia.
Ellison is 5-for-11 (.455)
in exhibition play thus far,
while Darensbourg has
pitched only one inning in
relief and allowed a solo
home run.
