Warriors complete
three-game sweep of
College of Idaho
3-12-08
Even though the College of
Idaho baseball team owns one
of two victories against
Lewis-Clark State College
this season, the Coyotes
probably have seen enough of
the Warriors, at least for
this week.
Pounding out 17 hits off of
six Coyote pitchers, the
Warriors blasted their way
to a 13-1 win at Caldwell’s
Simplot Stadium on Wednesday
to complete a three-game
series sweep. LCSC has now
defeated the Coyotes in six
of their seven meetings this
season and have outscored
them 55-14 in the process.
During the three game sweep,
LCSC outscored the Coyotes
31-4.
The Warriors, ranked No. 1
in the NAIA, improved to
18-2 with the win, which was
its 12th straight this
season. LCSC also has
defeated the Coyotes 14
straight times at Simplot
Stadium.
LCSC had 12 players collect
hit in the contest,
including three from Sean
Halton, who also drove in a
pair of runs. Despite
collecting only one hit,
Ikaika Lester was the big
run producer on the day with
four RBI, while Kyle Greene
went 1-for-1 with three RBI
and three runs scored.
The Warriors had plenty of
scoring opportunities as
along with the 17 hits, LCSC
hitters drew six walks and
were hit by pitches twice.
The Warriors left 13 runners
on base in the game.
As it did in its
doubleheader sweep on
Tuesday, the Warriors jumped
out to the early lead. In
the three-game series, LCSC
outscored College of Idaho
19-2 in the first three
innings.
LCSC got the ball rolling in
the first when Brent Wyatt
walked, and Paul Martin and
Josh Ashenbrenner singled to
load the bases. Green then
hit a sacrifice fly to
right-center to bring in the
first run. A wild pitch
allowed Martin to score, and
Halton’s single moved
Ashenbrenner to third.
Lester’s sacrifice fly to
right-center field made it
3-0 for the Warriors.
In the third, Ashenbrenner
opened the frame with a
single and Greene followed
with a two-run home run to
center field. It was
Greene’s second home run in
as many days and his
team-leading fourth homer of
the season.
LCSC added a run in the
fifth when Greene was hit by
a pitcher and later scored
on a sacrifice fly by
Lester.
LCSC made it 10-0 in the
sixth, sending 10 batter to
the plate to collect four
runs on four hits. Two walks
and a single loaded the
bases for Halton, who hit a
two-run double down the
left-field line. Lester
followed with a run-scoring
single, and Nic Benton drove
in the final run with a
single.
The Warriors added two runs
in the top of the seventh
when Thomas Lees doubled,
Ricky Reavis singled, and
Zach Adam was hit by a pitch
to load the bases. Armando
Reyes and Lester followed
with consecutive sacrifice
flies to right to produce
the runs.
College of Idaho picked up
its only run in the seventh
on Alex O’Brien’s infield
single. O’Brien was one of
the few bright spots for the
Coyotes as he went 3-for-3
with the RBI.
LCSC’s final run came in the
eighth when an error and two
walks loaded the bases with
two outs to set up Adam’s
RBI single.
The Warriors used three
pitchers in the contest.
Left-hander Blaine Hardy
went five innings and
allowed five hits with a
strikeout to pick up the win
and improve to 3-1 on the
season. Justin Mace went the
next three innings and also
allowed five hits and the
run, but struck out four.
Brent Stenger went the final
inning and allowed a hit and
the staff’s only walk of the
day.
LCSC resumes play on Friday
in Salem, Ore., when it
starts a three-game series
against Corban College. The
two teams play at 1 p.m. on
Friday and then have a noon
doubleheader on Saturday.
