Lewis-Clark State College junior pitcher Tyler Knigge was named to the 2010 NAIA Baseball All-America Second Team, while infielder Brian Burke and pitcher Colby Hawk were honorable mention selections, the NAIA announced on Thursday.
Knigge, a 6-foot-4 starting pitcher from Lewiston, had an outstanding season in his third season with the Warriors. He led the team in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts this season. Knigge, the son of former Warrior Kent Knigge, posted a 9-0 record with a 2.59 earned run average. He made 13 appearances during the season, including a team-best 12 starts, and threw 55.2 innings. He allowed 16 earned runs and struck out 66 to only 16 walks. Opponents hit just .218 off him during the season.
Burke, who played third base and some at both first and catcher, was a First-Team All-American last year at Kansas Wesleyan as a catcher. He transferred to LCSC and led the team in a number of categories. He hit .378 on the year and appeared in 52 of the team’s 53 games. He had a team-high 201 at bats 76 hits, 16 home runs and 64 RBI. He was second on the team in doubles with 19.
Burke also had a team-best .711 slugging percentage.
Hawk was the team’s ace for most of the season, posting a 7-0 record and a 2.15 ERA. He made 12 appearances, including 10 starts and allowed 52 hits and 11 earned runs in 46 innings. He also struck out 23 and walked 14. He suffered a late-season injury and didn’t play during the 54th annual Avista NAIA World Series.
Cumberland’s Matt Greener was named the NAIA’s Player of the Year.
The All-America Teams consist of 17 members on the First Team, 17 on the Second Team and an Honorable Mention Team, which is limited to 34 players. The HM Team is not position-specific.
The 2010 NAIA Coach of the Year will be announced in early January at the ABCA Coaches Convention.
