LCSC finishes 11th in final NAIA poll
5/8/2011

The Lewis-Clark State College baseball team moved up one spot to No. 11 in the final edition of the 2011 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 poll, which was released on Sunday along with the 45 teams that will compete in the nine National Championship Opening Round tournaments.

The Warriors, who have won 10 of their last 11 games, totaled 424 points in the poll and missed cracking the top 10 by nine points. Auburn Montgomery had the 10th spot with 433 points. LCSC even received one first-place vote in the poll.

The order of the final poll also determined the at large berths for the opening round tournaments. British Columbia, by virtue of winning the NAIA West Tournament title, received an automatic berth to the opening round and also was ranked No. 17 in the final poll. The College of Idaho, however, did not make the field of 45 despite being ranked No. 38. A few teams ranked behind the Yotes received automatic berths based on winning their league titles.

While the 45 teams are involved in postseason play, LCSC still has one or more regular season games left. LCSC will play at Seattle University on May 17, but LCSC officials are hoping to get at least a second game from Seattle.

The nine opening round winners will join LCSC for the 55th annual Avista NAIA World Series on May 27-June 3.

Embry-Riddle is the top-ranked team in the poll, followed by Oklahoma City, California Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups.
