1989: Lewis-Clark State College Baseball NAIA World Series Championship No. 5

LEWISTON, Idaho -- The Warriors closed out the decade of the 1980s with their fifth title, all at Harris Field.

LCSC opened series play with a 7-3 win over Point Park, Pa., and then dumped Hawaii-Hilo 12-6. St. Francis, Ill., put up a fight before falling 7-4, and the Warriors improved to 4-0 in the series with a 12-4 win over Oklahoma Baptist.

After eliminating North Florida 10-5, St. Francis stood in the way of LCSC's fifth national championship.

The title game, won by LCSC 5-2, was the lowest scoring championship game since 1977. The Warriors posted a 6-0 tournament record, using some big performances from different players each night.

Junior left-hander Darrell Wagner allowed 10 hits in the title game and five walks, but pitched out of several jams and recorded nine strikeouts. St. Francis left 11 runners stranded on base.

The Warriors broke on top 3-0 with a three-run third inning as Reggie Brown singled in the first run, and Rob Castaneda added a two-run single. St. Francis picked up a run in the fourth when Ken Simonich hit a solo homer, but LCSC added two in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Castaneda had the key hit, a two-run single.

Five Warriors were selected to the all-tournament team and catcher John NesSmith was named the MVP
