LCSC men's golf team takes commanding lead

Shooting five rounds of par or better, the Lewis-Clark State College men's golf team took a commanding first-day lead a the LCSC Invitational at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club on Monday. 

The Warriors fired a 36-hole team total of 582, while Montana Tech was a distant second at 609. The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday. 

The 54-hole event is LCSC's portion of the Frontier Conference regular-season tournament. Each golf team in the conference plays host to a 54-hole event and the team scores from each tourney are combined for an overall score. In the overall standings, the Warrior men took the lead with Monday's round by 15 shots. LCSC trailed Montana Tech by 12 strokes entering the tournament. 

On the women's side, Rocky Mountain has a one-shot lead over LCSC after 36 holes. Rocky shot a team score of 611, while LCSC was right behind at 612. 

Rocky and LCSC also are 1-2 in the overall standings, with Rocky holding a commanding 37-stroke advantage. After Tuesday's final 18 holes, the conference has one tournament left, next Monday and Tuesday in Salt Lake City. 

Patrick Cassabonne and Juanita Villa, both of LCSC, captured medalist honors in Monday's play. Cassabonne shot 71-72 for a 1-under-par 143. Villa shot the second-best round of the day in both men's and women's play with a 2-under-par 70 on the second 18 to finish with a 148 total.
