Lovell, Villa lead LCSC golf teams to victories

4-17-07

Freshman Joey Lovell and sophomore Juanita Villa posted the overall low scores to help the Lewis-Clark State College men’s and women’s golf teams to titles in the Lewis-Clark State Invitational, which wrapped up play Tuesday at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club.

Lovell matched par with a 72 on the final 18 holes on Tuesday, while Villa carded the low round for the women with a 4-over-par 76.

The two-day tournament, which features 36 holes on Monday, saw the LCSC men total a 883 after posting the best team score on Tuesday with a 301. Montana Tech, with a 303, finished second overall at 912, followed by Rocky Mountain at 922.

Lovell, who carded a 1-over-par 217 in the tournament, won the overall title by two strokes. Teammates Patrick Cassabonne and Jeff Ray tied for third at 221.

The invitational was LCSC’s home portion of the conference tournament. Each golf team in the Frontier Conference plays host to a 54-hole event and the team scores from each tourney are combined for an overall score. With just one tournament left in conference play, which is next Monday and Tuesday in Salt Lake City, the Warriors have a team total of 3,548. Montana Tech is second, 17 shots behind, at 3565.

On the women’s side, Villa continued her strong play from Monday when she was the only female golfer to break par with a 70. Her 76 on Tuesday gave her a 54-hole total of 224 and a seven-shot victory. Junior Chantelle Beveridge was fourth overall at 242 for LCSC, while Samantha Kluever, a junior, came in at 246.

The Warrior women finished with a 956 total after carding their best team round of the tournament with a 315 on Tuesday. Rocky Mountain, which held the lead entering the day, shot a team score of 328 to finish at 968.

LCSC and Rocky Mountain are the only two Frontier Conference teams to play in each tournament this year, which leaves them as the only two eligible for the league title. Rocky Mountain has a 3,200 team total, while LCSC is at 3,223.
