Shrout helps LCSC
women’s golf team to title
3-20-07
Cortney Shrout, Juanita Villa, and Kara Player all
carded 82s on a rough and blustery day to help the
Lewis-Clark State College women’s golf team capture the
title in the LCSC Invitational, which wrapped up play at
the Clarkston Golf & Country Club on Tuesday.
LCSC
entered the final 18 holes three shots behind Rocky
Mountain, but despite the tough playing conditions, the
Warrior managed to shoot a team score of 340 on Tuesday,
two shots better than their opening round of 342, which
was played in near ideal conditions on Monday.
Concordia finished second on the women’s side with a
689, while Rocky Mountain fell to third at 697.
On the
men’s side, the University of Victoria held onto its
lead to win at 613, while Walla Walla Community College
was second at 621. LCSC finished third at 624.
Shrout,
a freshman from Okanogan, Wash., earned medalist honors
for the two-day 36-hole event with a 163 total. Villa, a
sophomore from Columbia, and Player, a senior from
Australia, both stepped up their games and improved on
their first day scores. Villa’s 82 was three shots
better than her opening round, while Player improved by
11 strokes.
Concordia also was able to improve on its first day
score by one stroke, but Rocky Mountain fell off its
first-round pace by 19 strokes. First-day leader Dianne
Alcantara, a freshman for Rocky, carded an 88 Tuesday
after firing a 78 on Monday.
On the
men’s side, Victoria’s Steve Lane and Community Colleges
of Spokane’s
Jason Azzarito
tied for medalist honors at 150. Only 12 of the 57
golfers in the men’s field broke 80 on Tuesday, with the
top round being a 74.
LCSC,
which entered the day in second place, fell 24 strokes
off its first-round score with a 324. Joey Lovell, a
freshman from Sandpoint, led the Warriors on Tuesday
with a 79, while Patrick Casabonne, a sophomore from
Boise, fired an 81.
The
next action for both Warrior teams won’t take place
until April 16-17 when the Warriors play host to a
regular-season Frontier Conference tournament at the
Lewiston Country Club.
