LCSC women's golf team stands 18th after first round

SAN DIEGO – Cortney Shrout shot an 8-over-par 80, but the rest of the Lewis-Clark State College women’s golf team ran into trouble during the opening round of the NAIA Women’s National Championship at the San Marcos Country Club on Tuesday. 

The Warriors shot a team-score of 56-over-par 344 and stand in 18th place after the opening 18 holes in the four-day 72-hole tournament. Cal State San Marcos leads the tournament with a 311. 

LCSC coach Steve Tilden said the Warriors just didn't play well on Tuesday, but says there is still a lot of golf remaining and feels the team can bounce back. 

LCSC, which is hoping to improve on its 13th place from a year ago, was one of the first groups out on the course and actually started on the back nine. 

Shrout, a sophomore from Okanogan, Wash., was 3-over-par on the back nine, which included a birdie on a par-3 hole. She was even par after four holes, but had five bogeys during a seven-hole stretch. 

Senior Juanita Villa shot an 85, which was 13 over. He round included a triple bogey and a double bogey and she had a stretch of eight holes where she was nine over par. 

Freshman Alana Norris was a shot back with an 86, while sophomore Sue James had a 93, while senior Samara Kluever had a 95. 

The good news for LCSC is that most teams struggled during the opening round. The Warriors are only 17 shots out of the top 10.
