LCSC men's and women's golf teams hold first day leads

Jeff Ray, Scott Mooney, and Juanita Villa all shot the low rounds of the day to help the Lewis-Clark State College men's and women's golf teams take the first day lead during LCSC's portion of the Frontier Conference tournament on Monday at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club. 

Ray, a senior from Olympia, Wash., and Mooney, a sophomore from Meridian, both shot rounds of 71 and 74 for 145 totals after 36 holes. The 1-over-par scores were impressive considering Monday's wet, cold, and windy playing conditions.  Teammate Nic Arrenbrecht stood third at 150 after rounds of 76 and 74. 

With the three lowest scores, LCSC shot a team shot of 592, including a 292 during the opening 18 holes. That helped LCSC to a 25-shot lead over Rocky Mountain, which stands second at 617. 

Rocky Mountain, which finished the fall portion of the schedule with a 54-shot lead, saw that nearly cut in half by LCSC on Monday. The final 18 holes of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday with tee times starting at 8:45 a.m. 

The final conference tournament will be next week in Salt Lake. 

Villa led the way for the LCSC women with two rounds of 80 for a 160 total, which put her two shots ahead of Rachel Warren of Rocky Mountain. LCSC's Samara Kleuver is third at 166 after rounds of 81 and 85. 

LCSC has a team score of 669, while Rocky Mountain is close behind at 673.  RMC gained a 127-shot lead during the fall over LCSC and all but appears to have the conference title wrapped up.
