Villa wins individual
title as LCSC golf teams
both finish second
9-18-07
HELENA,
Mont. – Lewis-Clark State College junior Juanita Villa
fired a final round of 77 for a 54-hole total of 220 to
win female medalist honors at the Carroll College
Invitational, which wrapped up play Tuesday at the Bill
Robert Golf Course.
The
first 36 holes of the tournament were played on Monday
with the final 18 on Tuesday.
Both
the Warrior men’s and women’s teams placed second in the
tournament, which is one of five Frontier Conference
tournaments held throughout the year at various sites.
The team scores from the five tournaments are added
together for an overall team score, which determines the
conference champion.
Rocky
Mountain, which won the first tournament in both men’s
and women’s play, did it again in this tournament. The
RMC men’s team posted a 300 score Tuesday for an 879
total, edging LCSC, which had an 886 after a 297 round
on Tuesday.
The
highlight for the Warrior men was the play of Chris
Jarrett, who finished one stroke behind the overall
individual winner,
Bjorn
Ottosson of Rocky Mountain. Jarrett was the only player
to shoot in the 60s on Tuesday with a 68.
Unfortunately
for LCSC, Jarrett didn’t make the top five for LCSC
prior to the tournament and was playing unattached.
Jeff Ray and
Nic Arrenbrecht led LCSC scores with totals of 219 and
220, respectively. Ray tied for fourth overall, while
Arrenbrecht tied for sixth.
Villa was one
off the best score of the day with her 77, but LCSC
coach Paul Thompson said the pin placements Tuesday made
the course much tougher than the opening 36 holes.
LCSC
sophomore Sue James, playing in her first varsity
tournament, continued her solid play with her third
straight round in the 70s, carding a 76. The three
rounds mark the only times in her career she has shot in
the 70s on a regulation course.
Rocky
Mountain won the women’s side with a 922 total, while
LCSC was second at 946.
Rocky
Mountain has a 25-shot lead over the LCSC men after the
two conference tournaments, while the RMC women hold a
commanding 77-shot lead over the Warrior women. Both
LCSC teams are in second place after the two tourneys.
The third and
final conference tournament of the fall will take place
this Sunday and Monday in Billings, Mont.
