Sep. 14-15 (Butte, Montana)

It was the first tournament of the 2008-2009 season and we are once again headed to wonderful Montana.  The weather is always unpredictable and we were preparing for the worst.  We arrived in Butte to find that the weather was looking good and now it was time to play some golf.  Most of the girls that traveled were returners and have played this course before but we still found the greens to be difficult and we knew that’s where the tournament would be decided.  The next morning we awoke to sunny skies and we were confident that this year would be different to those of the past, we would finally beat Rocky.  We started out comparatively strong shooting 320 after 18 holes, taking a 14 shot lead to start the tournament.  The second round was a little difficult again shooting 320 but to merely pick-up 2 shots in this round.  After a 10 hour day of golf we were exhausted and headed to relax and get some sleep with a 16 shot lead.  Unfortunately one of our girls, Alana, suffered an injury after completing the 36 holes and she was not going to be able to play the next day.  After getting some sleep we again rose to beautiful sunshine and headed out to try and keep a lead to win the tournament.  Playing with only 4 girls put a little more pressure on and we ended up shooting 328 while Rocky shot a 307.  They took away our lead and gained 5 shots.  We were a bit frustrated, but we can gain 5 shots back very easily next week in Helena.  We are a very strong team this year and I feel as though we have the potential to win the conference and make it to nationals in the spring.  Next week we head to Helena, Montana for our second conference tournament hoping to pick up some shots.

The 2008-2009 season started this weekend with the first tournament being held in Butte, Montana. A week prior to the first tournament, the golf team got news that the golf course we were about to play had just been snowed over. Preparing for the worst we packed our bags, and hit interstate 90, arriving eight hours later at Fairmont golf resort. We completed a practice round later that day and found the greens to be a little tricky, ok that might be an understatement, the greens were really tricky. Later that night the men’s team got together to discuss tactics for the following two days and to figure out how we were going to out smart the greens. The following morning, the men’s golf team marched out onto the course with high spirits and total focus and that’s and that’s how we continued right up until hole fifty four. The weather was exceptional, ranging in the mid to high eighties with blistering sunshine, scorching every inch of our skin-this was not the Montana we had been told about. The sky line seemed to stretch for ever and not a breeze to be felt all weekend, it was truly spectacular. the golf was much the same, the men’s team ended up shooting 291 after eighteen and 290 after thirty six, putting us two shots ahead of our nearest rivals Montana Tech. Day two started off as planned and we were still in the lead after fifty holes and then it seemed as if we picked up a slow leak that was unstoppable. The team lumbered in loosing steady strokes to our rival Montana Tech, allowing them to clinch the title by two strokes. Our team played diligently and made a valiant effort but was unable to take the first win of the season. We finished the final day shooting 294 which gave us a grand total of 875. I will commend Jeff Ray, a former player from the 2007/2008 season who has come back as vice coach, for his persistent encouragement that he provided to the team, on the golf course, over the past two days. The team is rich in talent this year and we are looking to seek an early lead in the season so that we can wrap up next season with a ticket to nationals.
