Sep. 22-23 (Helena,
Montana)
With
the season in full swing
we headed to our second
tournament of the year,
the Carroll College
Invite in Helena
Montana. Again we left
early, at 5 A.M. on
Saturday morning. When
we arrived at the Golf
Course that afternoon we
were disappointed to
find that the green had
been aerated about two
weeks prior, and had not
recovered very well. We
played our practice
round in Windy brutal
conditions. That night
we headed to the good
old Super 8 Motel. The
next day the weather
forecast was not in our
favor. There was a 20%
chance of rain, and
expected 20-25 mile per
hour winds. Sunday, our
36 hole day was a long
one. Slow play was the
theme of the day as
usual, but luckily for
us the rain stayed
away. After the morning
round we found ourselves
with a two shot lead,
over this seasons rivals
Montana Tech. We fired
a team total of 291,
lead by a great round of
69 from Scott Mooney,
and supported by a solid
72 from Chris Kneen. We
played the second round
in slightly tougher
conditions. While the
morning round had been
windy it kicked up a
notch in the afternoon.
The scores showed this
change in the afternoon,
while we carded a season
worst 300. The team was
a little down about this
score, but pleased to
find out we had still
picked up six more on
second place Montana
Tech (306). We all
headed back to the Hotel
for some food and a good
night’s rest. The next
day we got to the golf
course only to discover
that we had about an
hour long frost delay to
endure before we teed
off. The conditions
early on in the day were
brutal, temperatures in
the high 40s with the
wind blowing around
20mph. However after a
rough start for the team
everyone was able to
settle down and bring
home the tournament.
Our final round of 296,
and three day total of
887, gave us the victory
in style, with a fifteen
shot lead over the
nearest competition
(Carroll College,
Montana Tech.). Scott
Mooney and Chris Kneen
played well as
individuals with a 2nd
and 4th place
finish respectively.
This win gave us the
kick start we need and
more importantly a 13
shot lead in the
conference total.

This
week we traveled to
Helena, Montana for the
Carroll College
Tournament. Again
heading to Montana we
were expecting the worst
possible conditions and
this week we were not so
lucky. We arrived
mid-afternoon to play
our practice round and
found it overcast and
windy, making it pretty
chilly. Yet again we
found the greens would
be were the tournament
would be decided. The
greens had recently been
punched and were very
fast, and in the great
words of Sue, “it’s like
putting in turbulence.”
As we headed to the
hotel for a nights rest
we were hoping to play
well in order to beat
Rocky this week. After
finding the weather to
be cold and windy we
knew it was going to be
a challenge for everyone
playing. We started off
hoping to take advantage
of the weather, and we
played what we would
call ok and after the
first day were we found
ourselves tied for the
tournament and still 5
strokes behind Rocky for
conference. That night
after going through a
monsoon, we talked about
what we could do to pick
up some strokes in the
final round. The next
morning as we arrived at
the course to find we
would be on a one hour
frost delay and not
teeing off until 9. As
we played, again in the
wind, we struggled, but
so did Rocky and we lost
the round and tournament
by two strokes. We were
disappointed but we
realized that if we
played that bad and only
lost by 2 that we could
easily beat Rocky. So
we next week head to
Billings, MT to once
again try to get a
victory. It’s Rocky’s
home course and we look
forward to challenging
them at home, with some
good greens and nice
weather, and hopefully
taking a conference lead
heading to the spring
tournaments.
