LCSC mens golf team, Jarrett tie for titles
9/29/2008

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Lewis-Clark State College men’s golf team and freshman Madeline Jarrett of the women’s team kept up their torrid fall seasons and came away tied for first place on Monday in the third Frontier Conference golf tournament, this one at Yegan Golf Course.

The Warrior men shot a team score of 4-under par 280 during Monday’s final 18 holes of the 54-hole event and caught Montana State-Billings at 834 overall. MSU-Billings had a 283 on Monday.

Also, Madeline Jarrett, a freshman from Portland, made up two shots on Jen Orchard of Rocky Mountain to tie for the women’s individual title, both at 224.

Both the men’s team and Jarrett also captured titles in last week’s 54-hole event at Carroll.

This was the third and final conference tournament of the fall with three more in the spring. The team score from each tournament is used for an overall score to determine the conference champion.  After three tournaments, the LCSC men have a 21-shot lead over Montana Tech, while the Rocky Mountain women lead LCSC by 21 strokes.

LCSC coach Paul Thompson said both teams are sitting good because both Montana Tech and Rocky Mountain have played tournaments on their home courses, while LCSC’s home conference tournament isn’t until the spring. He said the home-course advantage is worth 25-30 shots.

“This is huge for the men to be leading at this point,” Thompson said. “For us to win at Rocky’s home course is fantastic.”

MSU-Billings, an NCAA Division II school that took part in RMC’s 54-hole event along with a few community colleges, led the LCSC men by three shots entering the final round, but had to settle for the tie and an 834, which is 17 shots under par.

Connor McCracken, a sophomore, had LCSC’s best round of the day with a 67, while Scott Mooney had a 69. McCracken also led at Warriors with a 209 total, which is 5-under par.

On the women’s side, Jarrett carded a 74 on Monday, the lowest round of the day, while teammate Cortney Shrout was one shot back with a 75.  LCSC, which entered the day eight shots behind RMC, wound up falling by 14. RMC shot a 913 team total, compared to 927 for LCSC.

The Warriors return to action on Monday in a dual match with North Idaho College at noon at Clarkston’s Quail Ridge Golf Course.
