HELENA, Mont. – The Lewis-Clark State College men’s golf team and freshman Madeline Jarrett of the women’s team emerged as overall winners during the two-day Carroll Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Green Meadows Country Club.
The 54-hole tournament, which counts as the second Frontier Conference tournament of the season, concluded with the final 18 holes on Tuesday in windy conditions.
The Warrior men captured the team title with an 887 total, 15 shots ahead of both Carroll and Montana Tech. The Warriors fired a team score of 296 over the final 18 holes.
The men had three individuals among the top seven with Scott Mooney finishing second overall with a 218 after a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday. Chris Kneen also had a 73 on Tuesday for a 220 total, which tied him for fourth, while Connor McCracken was seventh overall at 222 after shooting a final round of 75.
Jarrett overcame a one-shot deficit in the final round to win the women’s individual title by four shots. Her 81 on Tuesday gave her a 240 total. Teammates Cortney Shrout and Juanita Villa tied for fifth at 252. Villa had a final round of 85, while Shrout carded an 86.
The Warriors, however, wound up second to Rocky Mountain in team play by two shots. The two teams were tied entering Tuesday’s play, but Rocky Mountain had a 338 for a 997 total, while LCSC had a 340 for a 999 total.
The conference uses six tournaments – three in the fall and three in the spring – to determine the conference champion. After two fall tournaments, the LCSC men have a 1,762 total and a 13-shot lead over Montana Tech. On the women’s side, Rocky Mountain has a seven-shot lead over LCSC, 1,960 to 1,967. It’s already a two-team race for the title as Carroll is a distant third at 2,112.
The third and final fall conference tournament will take place next Sunday and Monday in Billings at the Yegan Golf Course. Sunday’s play will feature 36 holes with the final 18 on Monday.
