Shrout wins individual title as Warriors place second
9/28/2009

BILLINGS, Mont. – Lewis-Clark State College senior Cortney Shrout continued her solid play by shooting in the 70s for the third straight day to win the individual women’s title at the second Frontier Conference Golf Tournament of the fall, this one at the Yegen Golf Club.

After firing rounds of 77 and 73 during Sunday’s opening 36 holes, Shrout came back with a 79 on Monday for a 229 total.

It’s the second straight conference tournament Shrout has won this season after claiming the conference’s Player of the Year award last season.

Both the LCSC men’s and women’s teams wound up second to Rocky Mountain in the tournament. The Rocky Mountain men shot a 274 on Monday for a 826 total. The LCSC men also played well with a 285 for an 845 total.

On the women’s side, Rocky had a 317 team score on Monday for a 934 total and a 19-shot win over LCSC, which had a 317 on Monday for a 953.

Connor McCracken led the LCSC men with a 208 total, which was just two shots out of a tie for first place.  Tony Azzara was next for the Warriors at 210.

This season, three conference tournaments are used to determine the regular season champion. The third tournament won’t be played until the spring when LCSC plays host to the 54-hole event on April 12-13.

Heading into that tournament, RMC has the lead in both races. The Rocky men have a 1,681 total, which is 53 shots ahead of LCSC. Carroll is third 32 shots behind LCSC.

On the women’s side, Rocky has a 33-stroke lead over the Warriors with Carroll a distant third, 110 shots behind the Warriors.

The regular season champions will be the top seed for the single-elimination conference tournament, which will follow a single-elimination bracket that is used for other sports, such as basketball or football playoffs. The No. 1 seed will play the No. 8 seed with the winner advancing to the semifinal round. The conference tournament will be held in late May and the men’s and women’s winners will receive automatic berths to the national tournaments.
