RMC men and Concordia women take opening round lead at LCSC Invite
3/15/2010

Connor McCrackenCLARKSTON, Wash. – The Rocky Mountain men and the Concordia women have the first round lead after Monday’s opening 18 holes in the Lewis-Clark State College Invitational golf tournament, which is being played at the Clarkston Golf & Country Club.

Both teams took advantage of sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s to shoot impressive rounds in what is the first tournament of the spring for most clubs.

The Rocky men, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, had an even-par team score of 288. DJ Kovach fired the best round of the day with a 4-under-par 68 on the 6,680-yard tree-line course, which featured tough pin placements on Monday. Teammate Connor Rakowski was the only other player to break par at 70.

The University of Victoria men, ranked No. 20, are seven shots behind at 295, followed by Spokane Community College at 304 and host LCSC at 305.

On the women’s side, Concordia, ranked No 8, shot a 308 for a 20-shot lead over LCSC, which is ranked No. 23. Victoria, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, is third at 338, two shots ahead of No. 15-ranked Rocky Mountain College.

For the Warrior men, Connor McCracken (above photo) and Scott Mooney both carded 75s, while Ben House and Chris Jarrett shot 77s. The highlight hole for LCSC was the 297-yard 18th hole, which is a blind downhill shot to both the fairway and green. McCracken and Mooney both birdied the hole with 15-20 foot putts, while House took an unusual route to a par. After hitting his first tee shot out of bounds, he drove the green and then made a long putt for par.

Cortney ShroutOn the women’s side, Concordia’s Lindsay Aho and Kim Lindow tied for medalist honors with 2-over-par 74s. LCSC senior Cortney Shrout (left photo) had a solid round with a 77, followed by Alana Norris at 82, and Heather Bruce at 83.

Monday’s opening round was delayed about an hour because of a light overnight frost.

The final round will be played on Tuesday.

This is the first of two home tournaments for LCSC this spring. The second is the final Frontier Conference Tournament of the season and will be on April 12-13 at the Lewiston Country Club.
