CLARKSTON, Wash. – Although it shot a better team score by one stroke, the Lewis-Clark State College men’s golf team couldn’t make up any ground and wound up fourth in its own LCSC Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Clarkston Golf & Country Club.
The Warrior women, down to four players during Tuesday’s round, also couldn’t make up ground on the leader and placed second. A total of 11 men’s and six women’s teams participated in the two-day 36-hole event.
Warm temperatures with some wind again greeted the participants in the tournament, which featured a number of ranked NAIA teams.
The University of Victoria overcame a seven-shot first-day deficit to claim the men’s title. Victoria, which is ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, had a 590 total after its second straight round of 295. Spokane Community College tied first-round leader Rocky Mountain, ranked 10th, for second place at 596, while LCSC was fourth at 607.
Junior Ben House led the Warriors with a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday, which was the second-best round of the day behind Spokane Community College’s Tyler Johnson, who fired a 70. House finished the tournament at 148, while Connor McCracken had a 76 for a 151 total.
On the women’s side, No. 8-ranked Concordia led from start to finish with a 620 total. Concordia had the best second-round of the tourney with a 312. LCSC, ranked No. 23, was second at 666, while No. 6 Victoria was third at 667. Rocky Mountain, ranked No. 15, has a 677 total.
Senior Cortney Shrout again led the Warriors with a 75 on Tuesday, which tied her with two Concordia players for the lowest round of the day. Shrout finished with a 152 total, which also tied her for second overall. Teammates Alana Norris and Heather Bruce finished at 170 and 171, respectively.
Each team has five players, but only the top four scores from each day are used to determine the overall team score for the day. LCSC only had four women golfers on Tuesday because Brittney Wheeler had to withdraw because of an injury after Monday’s round.
This was the first of two home tournaments for LCSC this spring. The second is the final Frontier Conference Tournament of the season and will be on April 12-13 at the Lewiston Country Club.
