Bruce paces LCSC women at FC opener
9/19/2011
HELENA, Mont. - Lewis-Clark State College sophomore Heather Bruce fired rounds of 76 and 77 for a 7-over-par total of 153 to lead all individuals after the first 36 holes of the opening Frontier Conference regular-season tournament on Monday.

The 54-hole event, which is being played at Green Meadows, wraps up with the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

Bruce fired a 3-over-par 76 on the first 18 holes and followed it up with a 77 to help the Warriors stand in second place behind Westminster. The Griffins lead the tournament with a 640 total, while LCSC is at 645 after scores of 319 and 326.

Warrior coach Paul Thompson said the play of Bruce and the Warriors was noteworthy because winds reached up to 40 miles per hour during the day.

"The wind really blew and normally that really does our women in but they responded and played well," Thompson said. "Our conditioning program is really playing off."

Idah Whisenant, a sophomore from Lewiston, also played well for the Warriors and is at 157 after rounds of 77 and 80.

The Warrior men, however, stumbled out of the gate and stand fourth at 618. Host Carroll shot a 594 for a five-shot lead over Rocky Mountain, while Westminster is third at 607.

LCSC sophomore Drew Reinland had two rounds of 76 for a team-best 152 on the par-71 course for the men. Dillon Williams had the best round for LCSC with a 74, but fell to 83 during the second 18.

This is the first of five conference tournaments, all 54 holes, held this fall and next spring. A running team score is kept during the five tournaments and the eventual conference champion is determined by the team with the lowest overall score.

The LCSC men are the defending FC regular season and post-season tournament champions.
