LCSC golfers enjoy solid day
9/20/2011

HELENA, Mont. – Despite a fantastic day on the course, the Lewis-Clark State College women’s and men’s golf teams couldn’t make much ground and finished second and fourth, respectively, in the opening Frontier Conference Tournament of the season on Tuesday.

The two-day 54-hole event at Green Meadows Golf Course wrapped up with the final 18 holes in ideal conditions on Tuesday after golfers played the first 36 holes in windy conditions on Monday.

The Warrior women trailed Carroll by five shots entering the final round and despite having four golfers shoot in the 70s, they couldn’t overtake the Saints and lost by three shots.

“That’s the first time I can remember having four girls shoot in the 70s,” said LCSC coach Paul Thompson, who is in his 10th year at the helm. “They really played their hearts out. I’m proud of the way they played today.”

Sophomore Brooke Dagner matched the women’s par with a 73, while Idah Whisenant had a 75. Kelsey Haycock had a 77, while first-day leader Heather Bruce had a 79 and finished two shots behind in the individual competition in a tie with Whisenant at 232. Shanna Herman rounded out LCSC’s scoring with an 80.

The Warrior men had the lowest round of the day with a 287, but trailed by 24 strokes entering the day. The Warriors couldn’t over take Westminster and wound up staying in fourth place at 905, while Westminster was third at 904.

“We played very well in shooting the best men’s total of the day, but unfortunately, we were just too far behind,” Thompson said.

Kyler Gable shot a 2-under-par 69 on Tuesday and tied Drew Reinland for team medalist honors with a 225.

The Warriors are back in action for the second conference tournament on Sunday and Monday in Billings, Mont. There are two conference tournaments in the fall and two in the spring to determine the regular-season champion.
