SALEM, Ore. – A very rough start is forcing the Lewis-Clark State College men’s golf team to play catch-up at the NAIA Fall Preview. The Warriors struggled at around 15th in a field of 20 teams for much of the day, but were able to finish on a good note and climb to No. 9 overall at the Creekside Golf Club on Monday.
Including the No. 12-ranked Warriors, the event features nine teams ranked in the Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA College Preseason Coaches’ Top-25 Poll.
Seventh-ranked Texas Wesleyan leads after day one with a team score of two over par. Third-ranked British Columbia is second at four over, and our Lady of the Lake (ranked No. 13) is eight over.
Lewis-Clark State, led by Senior Kyler Gable who finished round one at par, currently stands at 16 over par as a team. Gable was one of the Warriors’ most consistent players throughout the day as he hovered around par throughout the course and hit an eagle on his third-to-last hole.
Dillon Williams stands second for the Warriors as he was one under through the first nine, but had two bogeys and two double bogeys over his final five holes to finish at four over. Drew Reinland, named the Frontier Conference’s Player of the Week for his medalist performance last week, came in at six over on the day.
Joel Thelen and Blake Vinson, both of Texas Wesleyan, share the lead with a score of two under.
The event will wrap up on Tuesday. With a strong round on Tuesday the Warriors could move up quite a bit in the standings as they trail six teams by six or less strokes.
