The No. 20-ranked Lewis-Clark State College women’s golf team is hanging on to a four stroke lead after the first round of the annual Warrior Invitational on Monday at the Clarkston Golf & Country Club. The No. 17-ranked Warrior men currently trail Rocky Mountain College by three strokes.
Lewiston native Idah Whisenant (above photo) posted the top score on the women’s side for day one as she shot a 77. The sophomore’s teammates did not fare quite as well though as no other Warrior was able to get below 85.
As a team, the Warrior women stand at 340, while Rocky Mountain isn’t far behind at 344.
“We haven’t really had any good practices because of how cold it’s been,” said LCSC head coach Paul Thompson. “So this is good to get out and play a little bit.”
The Warrior men currently stand second out of six teams with a score of 308. Rocky Mountain leads at 305, while the University of Lethbridge and North Idaho College are tied for third at 314.
LCSC’s Drew Reinland, a sophomore from College Place, Wash., shot a 71 to lead the field. After Reinland, however, LCSC’s individual scores jump somewhat significantly as the Warriors continue to knock the winter rust off.
“We’re still not quite out of winter,” Thompson said. “We weren’t real precise with our chips or puts, but there’s always tomorrow.”
The final round of the 36-hole tournament will be played Tuesday.
