Warrior women trail Griffins by three strokes after day one
4/9/2012

LCSC's Heather BruceLEWISTON, Idaho – The No. 20-ranked Lewis-Clark State College women’s golf team is keeping pace with league leading and No. 17-ranked Westminster College after day one of the Frontier Conference tournament held at the Lewiston Country Club on Monday. The No. 18-ranked Warrior men had a rough go of it during the opening 36 holes and currently stand in third place.

The event, which will conclude with a final round on Tuesday, is the third and final conference tournament of the regular season. The tournament is sponsored by Potlatch No. 1 Federal Credit Union, a major sponsor of Warrior athletics.

The LCSC women shot a 36-hole total of 630 on Monday to closely trail Westminster’s score of 627. The Griffins entered the tournament holding a 38-stroke lead in the regular season conference standings, so a comeback win for the Warriors on Tuesday is very unlikely to knock the Griffins out of position to claim the regular-season crown. However, a win on Tuesday would give the Warriors both bragging rights and a better chance of move up in the NAIA rankings.

Heather Bruce (photo), a sophomore from Enterprise, Ore., is pacing the Warrior women so far as she shot rounds of 79-73 for a score of 152. She is second in the individual standings, one shot behind Westminster’s Jenteal Jackson who had rounds of 75-76.

Warriors Idah Whisenant and Kelsey Haycock also played well on Monday. Whisenant is tied for third with a 155, and Haycock is in fifth at 158.

On the men’s side, the Warriors finished the day at 605, while Westminster is in first at 595, and Rocky Mountain is second at 599. LCSC entered the tournament 12 strokes behind Rocky Mountain in the season standings, so it will take a very strong round by the Warriors and a very poor round by Rocky Mountain to alter the way the final standings look.

The Warrior men were led by junior Dillon Williams who shot rounds of 76-73 to finish at 149 which was good enough for fifth overall. Westminster’s Dane Jenson led the way with a 140 thanks to two rounds of 70.

LCSC is playing without its usual No. 2 Kyler Gable who is injured.
