MISSOULA, Mont. – Lewis-Clark State College finished the Frontier Conference golf championships on a high note on Tuesday as both of its teams cruised to third-place honors in the consolation rounds.
The LCSC women handled MSU-Northern 323-353 in the 18-hole battle for third place. Meanwhile on Tuesday, Rocky Mountain defeated Westminster 630-645 over 36 holes to claim the tournament title and the automatic berth to the NAIA national tournament that comes with it.
On the men’s side, LCSC outshot Westminster by five strokes 286-291 to claim third, while Carroll took down Rocky Mountain 583-593 to win the title.
“It went well today,” said LCSC head coach Paul Thompson. “Our guys ended up having the best round of the day, and the girls also played well.”
The Warrior men saved the best for last as Tyler Johnson (pictured above) shot a 70, Kyler Gable had a 71, James Rooney a 72, and Dillon Williams a 73. Johnson led the Warriors with a three-round total of 213.
“He’s been working on his swing a lot over the last month and it appears the work has paid off,” Thompson said about Johnson.
Heather Bruce shot a 77 to lead the Warriors on Tuesday, while Idah Whisenant had an 80 to finish with a team-best total of 225.
Both Warrior squads can now only hope to receive an at-large invitation to the NAIA national tournaments. Thompson says that there is a chance that the No. 21-ranked women’s team could receive such a berth, but that it is highly unlikely for the unranked men.
The Warrior men will lose seniors Johnson, Gable, and Williams from this year’s squad, while the LCSC women’s team is not expected to lose any from its roster.
