Warrior men and women in front after day one in Butte
9/10/2012

LCSC's Drew ReinlandBUTTE, Mont. – The Lewis-Clark State College men’s and women’s golf teams hold slim leads after day one of the Frontier Conference tournaments on Monday. Both Warrior squads hold three-stroke advantages through the first 36 holes.

On the men’s side, Lewis-Clark State shot a 284 in the first round and a 304 in the second to finish at 588 overall. Carroll stands in second at 591 (291-300), and Westminster is third at 595 (293-302).

“It kind of went south after the first round, but we still held on to the lead,” LCSC head coach Paul Thompson said. “The wind in the second round caused some problems.”

Warrior junior Drew Reinland (pictured above) leads the field with a 144 through two rounds (69-75). Teammate Jason Molner (71-76) is tied with Westminster’s Dane Jensen (75-72) at 147 for second overall.

“We’ve got eight teams here and we’re sitting in first, but anybody can win,” said Thompson. “Our guys are striking the ball extremely well. Our putting in the second round wasn’t real good, but we think we’re in pretty good shape.”

The Warrior women shot a 309 the first round and a 312 the second to end up at 621 overall. Westminster is second at 624 (313-311), and Rocky Mountain is third at 634 (313-321).

“They were just real consistent all day,” Thompson said regarding the members of the women’s team. “They got a little worse the second round, but that’s 36 holes and they just got a little bit tired. Thirty-six holes is a lot of walking and a lot of concentrating.”

Junior Idah Whisenant continues to play well for the Warriors as she shot a field-leading 149 on the first day (74-75). Teammate Heather Bruce is in second at 152 (76-76), and Westminster’s Mari Hutsi is third at 154 (76-78).

Both teams will look to hold on to their leads when they play the final round on Tuesday.
