CLARKSTON, Wash. – The Lewis-Clark State College men’s golf team wrapped up the title at the Warrior Invitational on Tuesday at the Clarkston Golf and Country Club.
The Warriors, which have now claimed medalist honors at four events this season, shot 301 on the final day to finish at 598. Whitman College shot 309 over the last 18 holes to take second at 620.
“The guys didn’t shoot quite as well (as they did on Monday) but they came in with decent numbers,” LCSC head golf coach Paul Thompson said. “They just kind of ground it out today.”
Jason Molner (pictured above), a senior from Longview, Wash., led the Warrior charge with a total score of 145, while Rylee Iacolucci, despite a double bogey on the second to last hole, finished second on the team with a 149. Danny Torress (153) was third and James Rooney (154) fourth.
Washington State’s Kent Hagen won individual medalist honors with a 140. WSU did not compete in the event as a team but did send five individuals.
On the women’s side, the No. 17-ranked Warriors took second with a score of 677. The women’s team, which shot a 352 on Monday and a 325 on Tuesday, gained four strokes on first-place finisher Whitman College (656) over the final 18 holes.
“The girls did a good job of coming back. They had the best round of the day, but had just dug themselves too large of a hole.”
Heather Bruce, a junior from Enterprise, Ore., shot a 79 on Tuesday to lead the team with a 165. Idah Whisenant was second with a 170, and Karina Davila and Kelsey Haycock tied for third at 172.
“They seem to struggle when it is wet and cold,” Thompson said. “It wasn’t quite as cold today and it wasn’t as wet and they shot a better round.”
Up next for Lewis-Clark State is the final regular-season Frontier Conference tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, on April 15-16. Both Warrior teams currently sit first in the league standings.
