LCSC tennis teams ranked No. 19 in NAIA poll
4/21/2009

The Lewis-Clark State College women’s tennis team rose from No. 20 to No. 19 in the NAIA Tennis Coaches Top 25 poll released on Tuesday. Also, the LCSC men’s tennis team went from No. 18 to No. 19 in its poll.

Receiving 159 points, the women’s team edged out Bethel College (Tenn.) by one point to earn its highest ranking so far this season. The Warriors currently have a 10-11 record with their last match being a 6-3 win over Whitworth.

The Warrior men’s team earned 130 points in its poll and was passed only by Lee University which flew from No. 22 to No. 16. Last week the men moved their season mark to 8-11 as they defeated Seattle University 5-2 and fell to the University of Idaho 7-0.

The NAIA this year has gone to a conference direct qualification plan for all sports. The Warriors have been assigned to an unaffiliated group as the Frontier Conference does not sponsor tennis as a sport. It is basically the same configuration as previous years but with a slightly different name.

Like last season, the top-ranked team in this assigned group earns an automatic berth to the national tournament. The other teams in the women’s group are Southern Oregon, Alberta and the College of Idaho. The teams in the men’s group include only LCSC, College of Idaho, and the University of Alberta.
On both the men’s and women’s side, LCSC is the only team from the assigned group currently ranked in the poll.

The final NAIA rating of the season will be announced on May 3, and the national championship will be held on May 12-16 in Mobile, Ala.

Both Warrior squads head to Caldwell, Idaho to take on the College of Idaho on Saturday, April 25, for the final match of the regular season. The men play at 9 a.m., while the women play at noon.
